China 2026: Local Eateries and Hole-in-Walls

Some of the best eats in China have been in casual no-frills joints. Some for the food, others for the experience, and some to sense the history.

1st up, a tiny place that initially seemed located in the middle of nowhere. We had wandered around a bit and hit a couple of dead ends.

Then we spied the sign in the near distance.

Wife had done her homework on this well loved restaurant in an alleyway. I grabbed and squatted on the 1st available open table. While she queued up to put in our order. Teamwork!

SHRMP ROE NOODLE
Fantastic!! Shrimpy goodness!!

WON TON

JOOK with MEATBALL
The reason we’re here. The simplest dishes can be the most difficult to get right. This place does it RIGHT!!

We were not under the delusion that we were unearthing a Hidden Gem. This can be classified as a Hole-in-Wall, one I’d happily eat at again and again.

Cantonese jook is my fave type of rice congee, with its smooth texture, over Teochew-style rice grains in soup, or the Hokkien and Hakka versions which are somewhere in-between.

Walking about, came across this Stone Rice Grinding Mill for fresh FUN, Rice Sheets!

Alas, the time was just past 2pm, their closing time. The staff was just tucking into their well deserved post lunch-rush meal.

No worries. Walking through the residential streets is a true joy. Home cured Lap Yuk sunning on a balcony.

Back on Main Road. An advert that cannot be resisted.

Most pricey menu item ÂĄ13 = usd $1.87

PORK RIB PEANUTS JOOK
GLORIOUS!! Flavor took me straight back to my mom’s kitchen.

FAT CHOY “Hair Vegetable” in Chinese for obvious reason. Never had in JOOK before, enhanced the overall enjoyment.

CHICKEN FEET SOUP
No “Phoenix Claw” BS here. Chicken. Feet!!!

Bit spicier and herbaceous than my home cook. Wife says like Bak Kut Teh. Bingo!! So good!!

Home cooked flavors in a casual comfortable setting with a very friendly owner. Simple. Great.

Nice!
Name / location?

GOOGLE/MAPS does not work on the PRC Mainland, regretfully. To complicate matters further, we tend to just try restaurants that look good at any given moment, without advance research or planning.

The Chinese name on the signage or menu is the best I can do at this time without English search engine power.

The two restaurants posted so far are in Zhongshan. I am using this thread to post about local joints from the other Chinese cities as well.
