chicken mole [NYC]

have places to rec? Manhattan or BK?

Maybe no replies because it’s so easy to make yourself. Just get a jar of Dona Maria sauce at a local Mexican market and a rotisserie chicken. The rice and beans are the hard part.

yea, but it’s fun to restaurant sometimes. Kalustyans has a better pre-pack, though I can’t recall the name.

I haven’t had their chicken mole, but everything else I’ve had here is good, so give it a shot!

I will. Haven’t been to Essex in quite some time. I have heard of Puebla.

Thanks for the tip on the rotisserie chicken. I’ve had a packet of mole from a market in Oaxaca in my freezer for a long time…was not sure of what to do with it.
These things are so tempting when you buy them…and then I get them home and they linger..and linger…

I’ve yet to find good chicken mole in the city. Lord knows I’ve tried.

I’ve had very good moles, including a mole verde con pollo, at La Morada in the South Bronx. Although I haven’t visited since Covid, I’ll bet the restaurant is still worth the short trek north from Manhattan.

Have you tried Claro in Brooklyn? I had a delicious meal there a couple years ago but it did not include their mole preparations. https://www.clarobk.com/menus/

Thank you both.
La Morada is on my list. Claro doesn’t show any chicken and is way to $$$.
Like most places I’ve been to around the globe, small and reasonable are often the best.
Manhattan, Mexico City and Paris are proof of that.
Hanoi was an exception, but that was 17 years ago. I’d bet there are more options there now.

I checked the Claro menu as well when reading this thread, remembering that I had had a very dark mole there (might’ve been chicken, might not, I don’t remember) before the pandemic. I live in the neighborhood and was excited to have fancy-ish mexican in the nabe, but didn’t feel my meal lived up to the price.

There are some Ruta Oaxaca restos in the area that seem to offer chicken mole items. I wonder though how many places actually make their own mole as opposed to buying prepared product., similar to that you can buy at home.
