Chicken katsu curry in SFBA?

One of my husband’s favorite foods to eat out is chicken katsu curry, and he’s always looking for new places to try. Any suggestions? We’re willing to drive to a good place. I’ve read about Champion’s in Berkeley, but haven’t tried it. Thanks. :+1:

I like Nippon in SF, and Jungdon in Emeryville (you will have to buy the curry separately, but the katsu is excellent).

There’s a fair amount on the peninsula, if that’s in your flight plan. There has always been a ton of Japanese… Tanforan was even used as an internment camp in ww2.

yayoi (palo alto), hyuga (bur?), diner japonica (rwc), demiya, curry life pop up in a casual Google maps search.

( And no one has mentioned murraci’s in sf and berkeley. They are usually who people say first)

My experience with curry places is they always have chicken katsu here in America because enough people don’t eat pork but you should check.

I have been to hyuga and it is quite good (authentic). Yayoi is a little higher end but also very good. The others i haven’t been to.

Plenty of ramen places have curry on the menu, i saw it at the tsukamen shop in sm this week, and a place in santa clara last week. These places might not have chicken though, i don’t remember seeing it on either menu. I was there for the ramen, so can’t comment.

I checked hyuga, they have two fries of chicken, karaage and katsu, and they are a curry specialist, i would send you there first.

+1 Nippon Curry in SF. Curry is excellent and the curlets are thick and juicy. There’s also a new Berkeley location right next to campus but I think their katsu frying is not up to SF location’s level and it’s more student-oriented (counter seating, paper plates).

Ha! We can go to the Bancroft location, and relive our youth. :grinning:

I got take out from Volcano Curry on Geary in SF a few months back and thought it was good, but I’m no expert in the genre. I’t’s pretty cheap and easy, so low risk investment if you are nearby, and they have pork, chicken, shrimp, etc. and the spicy curry had a good kick.

I usually get tonkatsu / pork katsu curry rather than chicken katsu but based on that:

Already mentioned above, another +1 to Nippon curry. I’ve only been to the one in the Marina in SF. They used to be a branch of Hinoya Curry from Tokyo. They’ve renamed but still feature Hinoya curry: https://www.instagram.com/nipponcurryusa/p/CZ2UUrfvGFw/

I like the katsu curry from Muracci’s in the SF FiDi, it used to be a regular lunch for me when I worked in the area. They also specialize in Japanese curry, mostly take-out.
