Chick-fil-A ........You're not welcome here.

‘Be like Bob’—

I think this says it all. Bob has the luxury of pretending not everything is political whereas some experience real-life repercussions of things that seem incidental and easily ignored.

I think everything is inherently political and that the isms listed in the rules point to who may not actually speak about the lived experienced of certain seemingly innocuous practices .

I do appreciate that people not become heated and engage in ad hominem attacks in the discussion. And perhaps not advocate for particular parties or party politics— that seems sufficiently off topic.

But food is an inherently political topic: how it is produced, how it travels, how it is accessed, and even determinations of what is delicious/gross or authentic (ugh) etc. We are socially situated beings coming together around something with significant presence in our social, cultural, and economic lives— and yes, political too.

Apart from Bob’s fairly clearly coded identity, I don’t think I could be like him because I think about such things.

But I can think elsewhere. I usually do.

A few things I would like to say, (I actually responded last night but wasn’t happy with my response and deleted it, since I find excessive typing on my cell a bit too tedious) so here we go.

First and foremost, I should say this isn’t my board and even though I am a moderator and quoted the rule(s) above, I am acting in no “official” capacity in chiming in about the rules. Some people didn’t seem to realize there are specific rules about topics ownership doesn’t want broached here so I wanted to point out it is plainly written on the site.

Secondly, although my name happens to be Bob something I guess I had forgotten several of you know, the cartoon above was not supposed to be me voicing any personal beliefs. If you google “Be Like Bob” you will see dozens upon dozens of similar meme’s like the one I created above. No, I was not the creator of those, just this one which I was playing off of the common theme and not speaking on behalf of myself personally.

The only reason why I posted at all, was because the day prior the sites owner had posted a “polite warning” about staying away from politics, but I wasn’t sure his message was seen clearly since he didn’t really identify himself as a moderator etc. Also similar to me not realizing how many people might know my name is Bob, I wasn’t sure how many people know sck is “the man”. So the Be Like Bob was just an attempt at a humorous way to support sck in his prior day’s post about keeping politics out of the discussion.

This I assume is where the term “slippery slope” originated, which is why I believe sck felt the need to issue a reminder and I was just trying to reinforce that. (again not speaking on sck’s behalf)

No, I cannot stress enough I was not chastising you. Although you created the thread so my “general” post is a response to your thread, I wasn’t directing anything towards you personally. Again, I felt the meme/cartoon would grab more attention that sck’s post the prior day. Apparently I was right! Yeah me!!! (yes I’m being sarcastic)

Once again and lastly, it’s not my rule, not my circus not my monkeys! I welcome you and all to continue to contribute to the thread till your hearts content, I am in no way trying to lock this down.

I simply ask that you keep in mind, this is a food orientated site. There are thousands of directly political sites where you can debate the morality of corporate donations vs. religious freedoms vs. lgbtq rights. That is NOT the focus of this site, so it’s ownership’s view to try and curtail conversations that can become heated given the extreme feelings and sensitivities regarding such issue(s).

At the end of the day I don’t come here, or anywhere for that matter, to possibly offend or hurt someone by my personal beliefs. So with that said, please enjoy and please be mindful of your words, something that is innocuous to you could have significantly different meaning to someone else, rarely if ever have I heard someone get deeply offended by a meatloaf recipe. (even if my grandmothers was better than all of yours!!!)

Be well all and happy postings!!

Here for a hopefully well received distraction from the above was my latest meatloaf. AKA big-foot-loaf was created for an annual Halloween party we held last week.

So I guess I can say I opened my mouth and inserted foot since I’ve been eating these leftovers for 3 days! (not so sure my grandma would appreciate this use of her recipe)

Again, be well…

I would like to applaud HO for keeping this thread. I don’t know if posts have been removed throughout the discussion but from what I have read, I’m pleased the thread is here and not upset by any posts.

My experience on food boards has been that the only time “political” rules get dragged out are when LGBTQ issues come up. It upsets me and was a big reason I left Chowhound.

IMHO - if this thread were to get pulled or closed then so should all discussions about Chick-fil-A. The company put themselves in this fire, have continued to keep themselves in this fire - so to assume that a discussion can be had about their food without politics is impossible. To ban the political discussion while allowing discussions about the company is an extremely biased decision.

At this point, anyone “into” food is well aware what you’re going to get when opening a thread about Chick-fil-A . . . . Now if a post about strange meatloaf shapes got political I would be surprised.

i wonder how many openly gay people visit chik-fil-a on the down low? would they then be considered closeted?

People do lots of things that are against their best interests. Eating at CFA and the proverbial closet are not related.

Being political 24 hours a day is exhausting, everyone makes missteps - and sometimes you just want to be “normal” and do things everyone else can do, so you let your guard down and do things that if you weren’t so exhausted from fighting the fight that you wouldn’t have done otherwise.

NotJr’s post was the only one deleted from this thread and it was self-inflicted.

A reminder for context, I’ve never eaten at Chick-fil-A. You think their sandwich is that good. Accepted. What is your standard of comparison? I don’t intend to be combative. It just doesn’t look that good and my experience with lettuce and tomato in fast food is really poor. Are the pickles crunchy or soggy? Do you have emotional connections? I do with Big Macs - the first two bites are bliss for me before reality overwhelms memory. Those two bites generally hold me for four or five years. grin

And so the courts have held. Espousing a belief you do not hold is not shouting “fire!” It is however the foundation of “safe spaces” and other coddling that leads to unfortunate outcomes.

I did not know your name is Bob. Hi Bob! I responded in the context of a meme that is common on the Internet.

The rules are the rules. It can be hard to avoid politics around many topics including food. Slippery slope. Best wishes.

Hello Dave! I was responding to Harters who called me by name in his post. All good in the hood. Thank you.

I now have a vision (since the moderators have little shields next to their names) of him pulling out a sword and self-inflicting himself. it’s one of those days.

That’s actually a little onion next to our names, so if I drew my sword, skewered my onion then myself I believe I would have self-ka-bob’d.

Fair question. I said the chain is that good, not the sandwich specifically. I actually meant the quality of their chicken. Lettuce and tomato don’t come standard on a sandwich. Just buttered bun and crunchy dill pickle slices. The chicken is much higher quality than any other fast food joint (although I have no Popeye’s around to compare), tender, whole pieces. Rumor that they marinate it in pickle juice. The coating is always crispy, and a pleasant sweet-savory flavor. Ratio of coating to chicken much better than any grocery store tender, which is way over-breaded. I eat Chic Fil A rarely, when it’s convenient, mostly the tenders or nuggets, and generally feel kind of bad about it because of the politics. But I’m glad I know about it, and can make my own decision…

I see the onion slice by the pic but this icon next to your name ? Is that just a badge of some type?

That’s my blood alcohol level, currently at 20%. Part of my probation I’m allowed to post as long as that remains below 22%.

(yes that is a badge so far for the month I’m in the top 20% of posters)

The grey/white shield just after your name indicates being a moderator.
