[Cheadle, Greater Manchester] Brezo Lounge

The Brezo is part of a smallish chain of casual bar and all-day eateries. I may have mentioned other branches before. All are called the “Something Lounge”, with the something always ending in O, suggesting a vaguely Mediterranean theme. That’s pretty much it as far as it gets by way of the Med. The menu runs through breakfast items (served all day), through the likes of burgers, salads and varieties of chicken and chips. . I’m quite a fan of “Big Lounge Breakfast” but, today, we went for lunch as I had an appointment with my optician just over the road. So, a reasonably restrained order. Fish finger sandwich for the love of my life – tasty fish, crisp crumb, tartare sauce on white. And, for me, a very tasty Chicken Ciabatta – fried chicken, streaky bacon, cheddar, edamame “guacamole”, tomato, spinach and a very zingy chipotle mayo. We shared a portion of fries which had sat around for a while and weren’t quite as hot as you’d like.

Back for a very decent lunch.

A burger was perfectly fine. Decent size. Decent flavour. Decent bun which didn’t fall apart. Toppings of lettuce, tomato, red onion, gherkin and a drizzle of the house burger sauce. Came with fries and a dollop of coleslaw.

Turkey and smoked ham pie came from a short list of Christmas specials. And it was a “proper” pie with pastry top, bottom and sides – none of the “stew with a pastry lid” nonsense. Inside small pieces of meat in a white sauce. It’s topped with a pig in blanket. There’s mash, of course. And mixed roasted veg – carrot, parsnip, red onion and sprouts. And red cabbage. And gravy, of course. A perfect set-up for the afternoon’s hard graft of being a retired bloke.

I’m like you, John - I also look for proper pies. For me, one of the pleasures of pie-eating is getting at those soggy, gravy-soaked pastry bits.
