No, not yet had bought ones though there is a very famous Welsh cake stall in Cardiff Market selling the classic kind as well as many different variations.
I have an authentic recipe from an authentic Welshwoman - I use this recipe to make Welsh cakes at home. Need to dig out the recipe for St David’s Day.
ETA:
As promised, here is the Davies Family Welsh Cake recipe!
Everyone seems to make them a bit differently, but this is our version straight from the little recipe box in my parents kitchen…
12 oz self raising flour
1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
1 heaped teaspoon baking powder
4oz caster sugar
6oz butter
(Rub all these ingredients together)
Now add:
4oz currents/Sultanas
1 large egg
Add milk if mixture too dry until it sticks together.
Bring it together with your hands, then roll it out to about 1/4 inch thickness on a floured surface, and cut out in circles.
Cook on each side (until the inside is cooked) on a skillet/frying pan oiled with butter.
Sprinkle with caster sugar while still hot.. and eat some of them!.. or have them cold with salted butter.
They’ll keep in a tin at room temp for a week, if they last that long!
