California Dive Bars

Pretty sure Delirium was there too. For some reason we didn’t go there. It was the Albion and the 500 Club and Zeitgeist, which was where all the bike messengers went they were my roommates. Albion was on the corner of Albion and 16th I think. Been 3 decades since I drank there and before google! so best leave this one to the scholars ! Glad to hear it’s still a cool location. Great small bar and side street for joint smoking.

I found this photo online - memories!

Maybe it is Delirium now I’ll have to look in a few weeks. Could be space was chopped up. I could be confusing Kilowatt with Delirium.

Found this article which says Delirium did indeed take over the Albion space, even winning an “award” for “Best Makeover Without Ruining a Good Spot.”

Cool. That pool table in the back so much fun. I’ll have to have a drink there. Monday morning blues I wish I could roll back the clock ! The photo of the bathroom is hilarious great find ! I can say as a matter of fact that there weren’t beautiful people and “hotties” there in the early 90s!

Maybe so. It was a dusthole dive when I was at the Farm.

Yes, we used to go 20/25 years ago and it was pretty funky. As I said it’s definitely been upgraded. Dutch Goose is still pretty funky but with a new fancier patio extension in the back.

Funny — just saw this article as the top one at sfgate: https://www.sfgate.com/food/article/sf-dive-bar-molotovs-is-timeless-17176541.php?IPID=SFGate-HP-CP-Spotlight

Do you run sfgate? Was this thread research for your article?!? :joy:

Nice find thanks for sharing that

I’ve never had a Tokyo ice tea !

Me neither, but I’ve seen one and I think we’re better off not having had one.

The Mountain Bar in Chinatown, now closed. 473 Gin Ling Way, Los Angeles, CA 90012.

They used to have an alternative art school down there, too, The Mountain School of Arts (MSA^)…

Nothing really divey in DTLA Chinatown anymore ? I can’t think of any.

Neither can I. Kind of a shame. Admittedly, I haven’t walked around to check in a while.

I would hope that one of those smaller restaurants with a liquor license and a bar has some sort of regulars. I mean people there get thirsty.

Always

Don’t sleep on Arcadia as a haven for degenerates.

Shady Brady’s at 4273 Live Oak Ave is worth not losing everything at the track. It’s no place to celebrate either.

You may miss the Buggy Whip but Lei Aloha on 5622 W Manchester Ave will have olives and marischino cherries and a little bit of liquor. Preparty for your wanna get away flight to reno or evening at Hollywood park casino.

El Bar de Siempre, 16451 Vanowen St, Van Nuys

No Yelp a plus; further investigation coming.

The Swallows Inn, in San Juan Capistrano, is thought of as a dive bar. If extremely eclectic’ qualifies as that, then it certainly is. The mix runs from bikers, through cowboys, through local seniors. I was once asked to describe it and I had a really tough time.

In honor of Pride Month…

The Mineshaft in Long Beach deserves mention. Good prices and pool tables. 1720 E Broadway Long Beach, CA

On a sorta related local note, apparently this scene from Zoolander at the Mine Sha(f)t was filmed in Culver City.

Any dive bar movie sleuths out there?

Meanwhile back up in our neighborhood, the Motherlode at 8944 Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood is surging with excitement and activity. My mother-in-law had a experience with the go-go dancers that will not soon be forgotten (pre-Pandemic Pride), and we’re looking forward to heading back.

The Bayou at 8939 Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood is also a good spot for cheap drink specials (Mardi Gras sorta themed).

What’s goin on up north? Twin Peaks Tavern? 440 Castro (formerly Bear Hollow and other names)? The Edge? Moby Dick?

Cheers!

Something just reminded me of this one time going to this total dive. My friend owed me lunch for helping him setup wifi at his mom’s house which was close to Fil-Am so we went to get some chicken and pork skewers and little lumpias.

Anyways, we parked around the corner on Mission, and going back to the car noticed this place across the street:

Of course we had to go in. It was like a few of the latino dives I’ve been to — only women bartenders wearing a certain style, no english spoken, everyone looks at newbies like ‘why are you here’, etc., but friendly enough. And they had a real handgun mounted behind glass on the wall with a label saying it was the actual gun used in the filming of Scarface.

Not saying you should go there but it’s a dive for sure.

Looks like it used to be called Gino’s Club (there’s still a non-used neon sign on a pole right there) but now goes by Carlito’s Club:
