Butchie's - southern style comfort food in [Whitby]

A weekend brought us to Lynde Shores Conservation Area for some birdwatching, with a friend’s teen in tow. Needing some lunch afterwards, Butchie’s fit the bill with what a hungry teen will eat. And we were quite happy with the food overall. Maybe not something to drive to Whitby for, but worth a stop if you are already nearby.

It is a meat-and-three kind of place, so we picked 3 meats and many sides, with some doubles to have adequate vegetables. The top meat was the buttermilk fried chicken fingers - crispy coating, not oily, moist meat inside. They went well with the recommended dill sauce. Next best were the smoked chicken wings, which had a slightly sweet dry rub and were reasonably smokey. They came with an OK horseradish mayo, but I liked them just as is. The pork shoulder was tasty but a little dry.

The best of the sides was Baba’s cucumber salad, very eastern European, with lots of fresh dill and red onion. Crispy sweet potatoes were spiced with Old Bay and delicious. Caesar salad was notable for slow-roasted garlic cloves that were then deep fried. Green beans with caramelized onion and pepper were fine, as was the mac ‘n’ cheese. Poutine, the teen’s choice, was OK.

Strawberry rhubarb pie was not too sweet, pleasant, with a crust that was more crumbly than flakey. Better was the chocolate peanut butter milkshake, made with Kawartha Dairy ice cream.
