Bula Fiji Pies is a hidden gem tucked away in a nondescript part of Vallejo. It’s conveniently located not far from the highways—perfect for anyone traveling between the Bay Area and the Sacramento Valley.
The owners, originally from Fiji (as you might guess from the name), are incredibly friendly and welcoming. The restaurant has been open for about eight months now, having transitioned from a popular food truck.
Their specialty is flaky, savory pies. One pie makes a satisfying lunch-sized portion, and the prices are very reasonable.
Today, my husband and I shared two savory pies for lunch: the Fish Curry Pie and the Chicken Curry Pie (ordered spicy). Both were excellent, with the spicy chicken pie hitting just the right level of heat.
I didn’t think to snap a photo until after we finished eating them
I, for one, am glad your used your words to describe the taste! It’s on the list now, sounds great.
I do have a rec for vallejo. Besides the brewery on mare island (surprisingly named mare Island brewing) , which has it’s strong points but isn’t head and shoulders above all the other good breweries in America and is a bit out of the way, i would send a person to mannys steakhouse.
It’s a meeting place where the major and many other town characters eat. The menu is basic , stick to the steak. The steak is solid, as is the bar. Each steak is clearly cooked precisely by someone who has done it for decades, and the meat is ok (a bit on the thin side but well marbled and seasoned). Prices are vallejo which was a shock (in a good way). Atmosphere is the real win.
I have also eaten a few times at Provisions. It’s good, in that fusion and flavor way. I have heard town house is a solid divey gay bar. I have tried a few taquerias, they are all good, but none seemed to stand out
