Watching a show about food in Oakland that includes a piece on Brown Sugar Kitchen, and didn’t recall seeing this story on HO.
It’s really a shame. I’m glad she had a relatively long run, though, and I’m looking forward to visiting her restaurant inside the Oakland Museum.
I wish, after that review, i had gone more often. In that nabe, i was going to Plum a lot, then Mua, with a side of Hopscotch. Did go up Brown Sugar but the cube was kind of polished for my taste, and a focus on entrees.
I liked Brown Sugar Kitchen, but when I’m in Oakland looking for fried chicken 9 times out of 10 I end up at Miss Ollie’s. I don’t know anyone in the Bay Area making better fried chicken and I like her Caribbean food as well. Funny I read a while back that Miss Ollie’s was closing, but they still seem to be going strong - maybe they reopened? I gotta get back out there.
Sad. I worked in Oakland from 2006 to 2010, and I remembered the time when Brown Sugar Kitchen first opened. We went there on its first week. Everything was spanking new then. How time flies.
1 years is a LONG TIME to be doing anything, even while it may morph and grow. I wish her well as she recreates her self and professional life, if she wants one.
I always think of her on Top Chef saying “don’t put that on me Padma.”
