[BROOKLYN] BITES - Good, Bad, Meh?

Although I don’t recall the orange items, atop your recent seafood stir-fry, from Oriental Garden, I do recognize them from another Cantonese restaurant. You might call them sea cucumber uni.

Crab legs & salt baked (fried) were my favorites, along with the ginger scallion lobster. Fried rice is a better 3rd crab dish in my experience than the custard was (though I love egg custard).

I liked the stir-fried vegetables, though seafood was scant. Lotus root was excellent. Squid in it was good too.

Black bean sauce on the clams was good, though I’d prefer it with anything else.

Razor clams weren’t anywhere as good as Wu’s.

Scallop was pretty but not worth it.

Didn’t like the eel(didn;t taste of much either), barramundi and turbot preps should have been swapped (turbot was also very underseasoned, though well-cooked), and clay pot rice rice was also underseasoned because apparently you got all the salt . Oyster omelette was meh. Snow pea leaves were good (though I got a few tough ones like your Nyonya experience), and water spinach was also blah because you stole all the chillies on top . j/k

Might have been too many exciting things in a single meal – I’d have been happy with crab and lobster and a vegetable or two!

Oh! The frilly stuff? I was pretty sure that was cuttlefish. The texture was neither sea cucumber nor uni. It was squid-esque.

I used the name “uni” to avoid the name “female sea cucumber gonads”:

Yes, the texture is chewy, much chewier than uni, even moreso than cuttlefish. Their origins, in sea cucumbers, was confirmed by a manager at Golden Wonton King. Here’s a better photo of them, from long ago, at a seafood market:

What an incredible feast! I’d be happily fat & broke afterwards, too.

Eh, we’re all (pretending to be) adults here. That is super interesting, thank you. You never know what you’re gonna get when you order mixed seafood!

This may have been my first king crab. And maybe my last, until I hit the lottery (could happen).

I’m guessing it was ever so slightly more affordable, since you went with a group.

I don’t know if I’ve ever had king crab. Probz not, tho. Snow crab is the biggest I got.

Dungeness crab remains my favorite crab. But the king crab was very good.

Than a car, yes.
