Ration Book Cheese Pie, using white bread as the crust. It’s a type of savoury bread pudding.
trying to avoid traffic during morning school rush and wanting to pick up celery and cucumber, i inadvertently found myself in a supermarket i don’t usually frequent.
despite their having a good selection of products at a range of prices, they and i have become distant to the point that they would never feature in any of my shopping considerations today.
however… having picked up my celery and cucumber (which were smaller and more expensive than i’d get pretty much anywhere else), i did spy this pie upon the shelf, and at a favourable discount.
i was unaware of the ‘British Pie Week’ occasion, yet this offering did take my fancy.
Looks like a nice enough pork pie - good pastry, nuggets of fat for flavour. The only thing that would improve it is the traditional jelly around the meat.
I had to do an internet search for the Musselburgh Pie, which is saying something given it’s in East Lothian and I’ve passed through there and not seen it (although to be fair, I’m more beach front and bike path when down there). In my search I came accross a short article about the Musselburgh having a tradition of pies on Monday, but even those seemed to be mutton. Interesting. There’s loads of pies here, but I tend to think of Scotch Pie and Macaroni Pie as the frequent choices around here.
Now I’m fancying a Lancashire hot pot which I know isn’t the same thing as a Lanc pie, but it was put in my head anyway.
Mum used to make it quite often, using what what I remember as scrag end lamb chops. Very simple. Just the chops, carrot, onion and stock, topped with thinly sliced potato which used to get crispy. Delish.
