Brian Tyree Henry’s 5 Favorite Places in Philadelphia

I concur with a few of his choices, even though I’ve never even heard of the show Dope Thief.

A sunset drink on top of the Bok Building provides the most stunning view of the Philly skyline,

Friday Saturday Sunday is a very good restaurant where we’ve celebrated 2 anniversaries in the past.

The South Street shopping district… is a mixed bag. 50% seem to be vape shops or places selling stripper outfits but there are some vintage gems, and we discovered a Black-owned soap shop where we got 3 bars of the most lovely soap.

And as for El Chingon, we musta ordered the wrong thing, as we were not impressed with the place at all.

In that area, for Mexican, I prefer South Philly barbacoa.

Oh, man. I had THE WORST meal there last fall and vowed to never return. When was the last time you were there?

It was before that. Disappointing if they’ve slipped that far. We used to go a couple of times a year after they opened but I’ve made it back to Philly since around this time last year.

We had a similar experience before that visit (maybe a year earlier), but since it kept getting hyped we went back. To be clear, this was Casa Mexico, which is related to SP Barbacoa.

Never again.

Haven’t tried Casa Mexico. I think the last time we were at SP Barbacaoa was spring 2024. At that point it was something like (though not close to) the barbacoa I’ve had in Mexico. Hoping they bounce back.
