Planning to go to Brentwood to buy some cherries and other produce. We don’t want to do u-pick, so what are the best produce stands to hit? I’ve heard that the cherry harvest is much smaller this year so I hope that they’re still available. Thanks.
Cherries ARE available, but for some growers it’s winding down - this is not a good year for cherries. It’s been my experience that the stands on major roads (eg Marsh Creek Road) tend to be a little more expensive than those off the beaten track, but that’s no surprise. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with any stand you choose, as long as it doesn’t look like they’re selling cherries “that fell off the truck”: a ‘network’ of produce thieves was just busted in San Joaquin County, caught stealing cherries from one of the larger growers in the area, and the thieves kept a ledger that tracked their thefts and where they were selling them.

This Saturday is the San Leandro Cherry Festival. Lots of good vendors there, including ones from the Brentwood area.

Thanks for the link. The news story I heard didn’t identify which grower was victimized - they DID identify the suspects - but we’re surrounded by cherry orchards, and Mrs. ricepad and I just drove past Morada Produce’s packing shed earlier this week.
