[Brentford, London] La Rosetta

A solo dinner. But an enjoyable one at that. I like to try new dining experiences but it’s also nice to come back to somewhere after several years and find it’s just the same. As on previous stays in Brentford, I’d been doing some research at the National Archives. This is pretty much the quintessential town centre family owned Italian restaurant, whether in Italy or the UK. Good food, welcoming staff. It’s popular as you’d expect – busy, bustling with groups of family and friends enjoying themselves. And me – Johnny-No –Mates.

There was bruschetta to start. Two slices of toasted bread, drizzled with olive oil and topped with halved cherry tomatoes and garlic. For a main course, small chunks calves liver, quickly pan fried, so it’s still soft and juicy, with a sauce of white wine, onion, pancetta and porcini mushrooms. It comes with new potatoes and mixed veg.

Tiramisu for dessert. Anyone who knows me will know it’s always tiramisu for dessert in an Italian gaff. This was a decent enough job but could have stood more of a hit from coffee and booze – no need to be timid.

I laughed out loud when I read that.

Do the English get into arguments on how to pronounce that like we do in the States?

I can’t recall discussion, let alone argument. But I suspect many will pronounce it “brush”, because that’s how it’s spelled. On the other hand, because I’m a committed foody and all round smartarse, I pronounce it “brusk”.
