At the recommendation of a waiter at another restaurant, I checked out Bread House located in a strip mall on Route 9 South in Manalapan. What a really nice find – Georgian food. On a Sunday night at around 7 pm nearly every table in this small restaurant was occupied. Some guests were Georgian speaking and others, like me, were not. The waitstaff could not have been more pleasant guiding us through the menu. There were just two of us so our sampling was limited. Meal started with a very nice complimentary bread called shoti. We ordered the imeruli salad which included cucumber, tomato and red onion in a delicious walnut dressing. For entrees we shared chakhokhbili which is a chicken stew (perfect for dipping the shoti bread) and khinkali, kind of like xio long bao (soup dumplings), but in a much thicker wrapper with less soup. These were quite heavy and filling and I could only finish two (serving of six). We finished with honey cake. There were two options – less sweet with sour cream filling or more sweet with caramel filling. We opted for the sour cream and it was a nice ending to the meal. I observed lots of other interesting looking plates being delivered to tables. Lots more to try out.
Hadn’t heard of Bread House. So, thanks for posting about it! I checked the menu on their website. Lots of tasty sounding dishes. Since they offer take-out, and we’re always looking to expand our options — especially a place that is not Italian! — we’ll definitely be trying it.
How is it that area can have two Georgian restaurants with 15 miles? Is there a large Georgian population?
We’ve been to Georgian Chef several times and found it very good though I have no experience with Georgian cuisine other than from there. I’ll have to this place.
I was wondering how long it would take you to see that… ![]()

We may have to do a taste test.
I find the service better at Bread House and the food better at Georgian Chef. The food is good at Bread House, but Georgian Chef is better in my opinion.
The area does, yes, as told to me by the owner of the wonderful Manachoux bakery in Alexander Plaza. She is from Georgia and makes some of their desserts: roulette, a honey-infused cake rolled around mascarpone cream and in flavors like Snickers, mango, caramel walnut, and pistachio; almond-flavored mousse cakes; layer cakes called milka; vanilla, chocolate, raspberry pistachio, and mixed berry choux à la crème; and opium, a layered pastry with diplomat cream, mixed berry filling. Definitely worth checking out!
Opium?
She spilled the beans on the secret ingredient.
I haven’t eaten at The Bread House, But I’ve been to the Georgian Chef several times. I’ve always found the wait staff friendly. The food is excellent. Momma makes the Napoleon to order. On one visit, she wasn’t working and we were so disappointed .![]()
