Black Pepper [Menlo Park]

  1. it’s Malaysian ! We don’t have too many Malaysian places. Although the menu is small.

  2. It’s really tasty !

  3. Go when you’re tired of the Burmese places. There is a certain similarity.

  4. It’s a bit on the expensive side. Dinner for two was about $90.

  5. Full bar.

Someone said that the chef or the owner? was from Banana Leaf. Is the food better than Banana Leaf’s?

Couldn’t tell you. Where is/was Banana Leaf?

They are in Milpitas. I haven’t been for years. Though I vaguely remember that the food was a bit on the sweet side.

Oh, Milpitas. Yeah, I ate there once.

BlackPepper is better, more vibrant spices better ingredients, less TGI Friday more Palo Alto, but a more limited menu.

One more note, I didn’t like the interior design of the restaurant. It’s all muted greys, felt like a funeral parlor with a bar ( which isn’t a bad idea, come to think of it ). For an “upscale place” I would have expected more fun, more textured walls, even though I know all that is expensive. YMMV.

Black Pepper really is like the Burmese ** restaurants, which are packed every night. If you like Palo Alto’s Rangoon Ruby, give Black Pepper a try.
