Every once in a while, I will go into See’s to buy a marzipan or two, which has always been my favorite from See’s (yes, I was a kid who liked dark chocolate and marzipan). I’ve learned to avoid most packaged imported chocolate-covered marzipan, which is invariably way too sweet. See’s is flavorful and not a lot sweeter than straight-up almond paste.
See’s will always offer you a sample piece, even if you’re only buying a single piece of chocolate, and I appreciate that they’ve evolved from just handing you one to asking if you’d prefer milk or dark, to just asking you what you’d like. (If I’m already buying marzipan, I’ll take dark chocolate molasses chips.)
ETA: See’s uses Guittard chocolate, another Bay Area company, which is still family owned, and whose Cocoa Rouge and chocolate I will often use in baking.
