Among the picks, I have tasted Dandelion Chocolate from SF and la Maison du Chocolat.
I’m a big fan of Leonidas, a Belgian company, but I don’t know if they are available in the US.
Good to know! I usually have a few of my favorites when we’re in Yurp in the summer ![]()
I like La Maison de Chocolat chocolates.
I have sent Recchiuti Chocolates as gifts.
We received a large box of Leonidas chocolates at Xmas. I find most too sweet.
I mostly buy Soma Chocolates in Toronto.
I have also sent friends Dolcetta Chocolates made by @Babette
I have also sent Li-Lac chocolates as gifts.
I also like Steven Tran chocolates in Toronto.
@linguafood Leonida’s used to have a lovely boutique on Madison Ave in Manhattan. It’s been closed for a few years now. I do remember them being quite good.
@Zoeliculious Li-Lac chocolate is quite delicious as well.
Frankly, the only praline I ever get anymore from them is the Manon Cafe.
I’m not even big on white chocolate (or sweet stuff in general), but these were a special treat from a tea store in my hometown that my mom would occasionally splurge on for us.
So, it has major nostalgia going for it, too.
See’s Candy is a favorite here in the San Francisco BA. They’re more old school chocolates, not super fancy or exotic but everyone I’ve sent them to loves them. We locals love them too. Excellent customer service as well.
I love See’s. They won’t ship their chocolates to Canada, unfortunately. I used to stock up not only in California, but also at the Denver airport.
Purdy’s is the older school style Canadian brand I buy in Canada.
Laura Secord has gone downhill over the past 20 years.
Sorry. I didn’t know that.
I’ve tried to buy See’s online to ship to Canada a few times over the past 5 years. LOL
There was a short amount of time, about 10 years ago, where some See’s chocolates, suckers, and peanut brittle were sold at one Cdn nationwide bookstore.
Fannie Farmer used to be quite similar to See’s. I haven’t had any in 25 years.
I like to go in and hand-pick the chocolates. Some of them are not in the pre-boxed they carry. Also, the website doesn’t offer all they carry. Thought I was going to be moving to another state and wondered how I was going to get my favorites. I agree, old school chocolates in their look. No unusual ingredients. Have a store in my town. Thats the good news and the bad news.
I’m such a dick (and a Belgian) as I thought “Yeah, they’re good but…” and then started thinking about places I’d stop first in Brussels… I was going to refer to others but then realised why? We’re talking the US, right?
Comments on taste?
I avoid boxed chocolates as I don’t like milk or white chocolate, which they usually include.
A friend brought me a box of Pierre Marcolini chocolate, with only dark, which he picked up in Belgium. Really enjoyed them.
Years ago, Leonidas used to have a store in DC, and I would get them regularly. Amazing. They are fresh chocolates, so won’t last. They were flown in regularly.
Years passed. They do have a store in Montreal, and I got a few chocolates about a year ago. They were very good, but I was a bit disappointed.
Rheo Thompson in Stratford, ON makes some all dark boxes selections. I believe they sell their boxes online.
Purdy’s also sells all dark boxes. I bought some at Xmas.
So does See’s in California, but they won’t ship to the Great White North.
The 2 Leonidas locations in Toronto closed some time ago.
There is still a Leonidas in Windsor, across the river from Detroit, and another in Ancaster, ON.
Toronto now has a Läderach store. Although, comparing Swiss to Belgian might be comparing apples to oranges. LOL
I prefer Läderach.
It’s an international forum. Why not?
Also, you’re Belgian? I thought you were Scottish.
