Belly Ice Cream calls it quits with grocery stores

For years I’ve been loyally buying and deeply enjoying Belly Ice Cream. This year they cut the GTA off without so much as a farewell opportunity to stock up. (I may be a little hurt and angry.)

Does anyone know of another Ontario ice cream made with all natural ingredients and a hefty dose of creative flair? Don’t say Kawartha Dairy. Their list of additives reads like a high school chemistry exam.

At risk of a broken record: Gelato Fresco!
But also difficult to find - the major supermarkets now require ‘just-in-time’ deliveries, and small producers don’t have the flexibility to provide delivery at ‘arbitrary times’.

Love Gelato Fresco, but they’re a complete non-starter. Gelato doesn’t ship nor store well so they’ll never be in any major grocery store. Besides, I have Bellagios Gelato, a lovely Italian cafe, not a five minute drive/15 minute walk from my door. Thanks for trying, though.

I am sad to hear this.

I haven’t bought Mapleton Organics in a long time. Not sure if they have any interesting flavours.

In Toronto, Death in Venice has some interesting flavours, and a few would be available at the Sanagan’s in East York, Kensington and at the Annette shop. It’s more of a gelato than an ice cream. (Read what you wrote about Gelato. Death in Venice is owned by a Turk, and the flavours include a baklava flavour, etc. )
I don’t know if anyone in Oshawa/ Ajax/ Whitby carries it.

I also enjoy the innovative flavours at Good Behaviour, which can be delivered. There is an East Toronto location. I bought a few pints for a gift exchange last year and had them delivered. Again, not sure if they will deliver east of Scarborough.

Give Honey’s a try. Yeah, they’re plant-based. But that’s not why we buy it. We were given a sample at a vegan store (even though we’re meat eaters), and we were like… wow, this has no dairy? Just make sure your freezer is the normal temp or you will need to take it out for a bit before scooping (non-dairy tends to be harder straight from the freezer). https://honeysicecream.ca/

I’m not sure of their ingredients. Of all the times to be forced to buy American. Sheesh!

Can you find Reid’s Dairy ice cream in Oshawa? It’s made in Belleville. No idea if they use stabilizers you dislike.

I was friends with one of the kids in university.

Same issue. I get why companies do it. It’s just not for me. I say we all picket Belly Ice Cream with Bring It Home signs.

If you want to trek up to Markham, Village Grocer supermarket make their own ice cream that people who have tried swear by. It’s pricey though.

I just looked at the ingredient list of Belly Ice Cream and they have also additives like guar gum or locust bean gum - so I am not sure why other ice creams seem to have too much additives for you

Thanks Stevey. That is a great tip.
