BEER (2017-2023) - What did we drink (today/recently)?

Harvester of Simcoe by Equilibrium Brewery (Middletown, NY) - DIPA

Piney and citrusy throughout - interesting mixture of piney, dank, herbaceous flavors mixed with grapefruit and lemon as the main, dominant taste. Some bready malts in the background and a quite bitter, dry finish. Intense, interesting but also a bit one note IPA.

Energy Equals by Equilibrium Brewery (Middletown, NY) - Hazy DIPA

Very tropical smell but the taste is surprisingly more subdued with hints of pineapple, mango and more dominant grapefruit. But these flavors fade quite fast and give room to herbal, dank notes and a quite bitter finish. Overall good hazy IPA but “feels” somehow unbalanced.

Big Papaya by Great Notion Brewing (Portland, OR) - Fruited Sour

Very tropical flavors which start quite natural tasting but unfortunately turn towards a quite artificial tasting note (the ingredients list includes “natural flavors”, beside regular fruits). The artificial flavor are quite overpowering and have a bitter, unpleasant note. Overall one of the weaker sour beers from Great Notion.

Cherry Cobbler by S27 Alehouse & Brewery (San Jose, CA) - Smoothie Sour

Really nice smoothie sour with tart cherry flavors which are rounded out by the vanilla ice taste. Good counterbalance from the kettle sour. Quite thick, yet creamy mouthfeel.

Gouden Carolus Keizer Blauw
Tastes a bit like toasted raisin bread.

Vice POG by Wild Barrel Brewing (San Marcos, CA) - Fruited Sour

Wild Barrel’s Vice series of fruited sours us very predictable in a good way - exact the fruit flavors described on the can and a good counterbalance from the kettle sour to deliver a refreshing, not overly sweet sour. This POG version is no different and a great beer for the warmer days

Leisure Mode by Mayflower Brewing Company (Plymouth, MA) - Hazy IPA

Quite citrus heavy upfront with hints of tropical fruits try to come through but remain more in the background. Then a lot of herbal notes with quite a lot of hops and bitterness take over. Surprisingly flavorful for low ABV. High carbonation gives it also more body

Coconut Drip by Finback Brewery (Queens, NY) - Imperial Pastry Stout

Interesting viscous, chewy stout with notes of dark chocolate, dark roast coffee, toasted coconut and peanut butter which gives a good mix of roasted and slightly sweet flavors. Towards the end molasses taste get more dominant with a nice slightly salty, boozy and quite bitter finish.

The first pilsner outside of Germany that an American brewery got right, i.e. it’s not overly hopped like every other single pilsner I’ve tried. Really lovely.

Which brewery?

Hyperlocal and so new they’re only selling in-house for now

IPA by Frost Beer Works (Hinesburg, VT) - IPA

Typical IPA with citrus notes, some herbal, piney flavors, very light dank aromas and a medium bitter, dry finish. Nothing overly exciting and unusual but also a good, middle-of-the-road IPA

Gaze by Definitive Brewing Company (Portland, ME) - Red Ale

Nicely balanced red ale with roasted toffee, molasses and caramel flavors. Balanced with some slightly sweet malts and some moderate bitterness in the finish. Very drinkable ale.

And they’re already out of it :sob:

But there are many good pilsner in the US - are you looking for German or Czech-style pilsner ?

Double Stack by Great Notion Brewing (Portland, OR) - Imperial Coffee Stout

Strong upfront and lingering flavor of dark roasted coffee with a nice roasted malts backbone and growing flavor of maple syrup which adds some sweetness but doesn’t overwhelm. Overall brilliant breakfast stout.

Flashlight Tag (Peanut Butter and Chocolate) by Belleflower Brewing (Portland, ME) - Imperial Stout

Smooth imperial stout with a balanced roasted malt backbone and prominent dark chocolate flavors. The added cocoa nibs added some additional flavors, whereas the peanut butter was there but surprisingly in the background. Overall good but a stronger peanut butter flavor would have helped to let this stout to stand out more.
