Balma Meris, Frazione Sant'Anna, CN, Piemonte, Italy

While most of my Italian meals are home-cooked, a failed oven and gas pipe has sent us to restaurants lately. And with that, we’ve been searching for the perfect Italian Alpine restaurant.

We’ve found it in Balma Meris, in Frazione Sant’ Anna, a bit south of Cuneo and not far from Alta Langhe. (Indeed, we had lunch there today with cousins who drove from Dogliani without complaint.)

The small menu is a combination of Piemontese classics and dishes that are copied from the big fancy places you probably already know about. If you’re looking for an excuse to head up to the mountains, you’re unlikely to do better than this unless you spend far more.

I recommend the sliced tongue with green sauce antipasto, the tiny ravioli called “plin” as a pasta, and the trota alle erbe as a second course. It’s a new favorite.
