Bad news in the age of Covid-19

I was going to “like” this post but I don’t really like it. Hoping things get better asap.

Desperately looking for a silver lining: you mask is well fit and your glasses aren’t fogging up.

Sorry - that’s all I’ve got.

Apparently the firefighters took down our burning fence and beat it back, so now it is good news.

Now if we could just have some electricity. Otherwise, I might be trying to make larb on my gas stove before it gets dark.

This is a relief to see! Did the fire harm any of your carefully nurtured plant babies? Also, did they cut power due to the fires, or due to excess demand for A/C during the heat wave?

I do know PSE, the big power company here sells as much available electricity from the grid to California and other places. H works for the company, so he keeps me clued in.

Thinking of you. Stay well.

This, and that you are safe is the best news right now.

Sometimes I’m at a loss for words. Often, I’m at a loss for words.

Sincerely hope you and yours are safe. In every way.

I, too, hope you are well.

Thinking of you and hoping you and your family are safe. Hoping some of your plants and fruit trees are OK, too!

Looks like not only did they beat it back but they have let you back in. THAT is a big deal.

All good. Thanks

Glad to hear things turned out more or less okay. That must have been pretty terrifying.

So glad to hear you’re back home!

The idiots are at it again. Different ethnicity, same fuckwit mentality.

Just read this morning the Mayor of Hollywood Hills, CA asked their local power company to shut off the electric to one specific home due to large party gatherings.
Drone surveillance.

We actually aren’t supposed to have come back yet, but neighbor said it was still smoldering. Here’s a video from when we got home.

Stupidity knows no bounds of ethnicity, gender, or politics.

Given the anti-social behavior associated with protests, celebrations, and other gatherings (which I attribute as much to cabin fever as to virtue signaling) I am grateful for the second amendment here in the US. I know other people feel differently about protecting themselves.

Good. We need more enforcement. I want to see citations with fines for not wearing masks and for gatherings in excess of ordered limits. I’d like to see arrests of law enforcement who refuse to enforce orders. The rules are the rules.

Jeepers. Are you on public utility water or well? Can you soak the smoldering? Do you have power?

You have surely figured out by now that I have a warped sense of humor and an odd thought process. Bear with me. We use an app that watches our cat’s food bowls so that my wife can see the cat when she is traveling (pre-CV-19). I can imagine you setting up such an app and us organizing a Hungry Onion fire watch schedule. Telephone tree, alert numbers, … I’m good for a couple of hours overnight. While we must find humor in our circumstances (laugh or we will cry) if there is value I will stand up. I can’t be there to help clear debris. I can set up a watch schedule and an email mailing list and an SMS group. I just checked - your karma account is good.

No power yet, and our" generators" ( learned about those last fall) are on empty. Charging some solar ones but slow because of all the ashes in the air. We are on city water, but we out out the smoldering with water from the pool.

There is a saying in sailing that “there is no substitute for a frightened man with a bucket.” Forgive the gender specificity. It’s a couple of hundred years old from different times. Fear and adrenaline can move a lot of water.

It is my understanding that a key to firefighting is reducing heat. As things dry out if they are still hot smoldering and even fire can regenerate. This is particularly important to my understanding when you have fundamentally dry litter. Please look out for yourselves.

Never miss an opportunity to eat, sleep, go to the bathroom, charge something, or top up fuel and water.

On the other hand, a restless night’s sleep means chances to go out in the yard and check the hot spots.

You are in our thoughts. Here is a socially distant Internet hug (–o--).

Thank you!

Funny you should mention buckets. My young neighbor was trying to put out the smolder with buckets he found in my yard, but they were part of my double bucket set ups, so there were holes in the bottom two inches.
