shrinkrap, I don’t doubt that. Some tend to think that anybody with skill sets different from theirs makes them not too smart. So to one of the most attitudinal ones, I asked if he knew how to start an art line. Then I asked him if he knew what an art line was. Guess what…
I’ll bite.
What’s an Art Line?
@jcostiones and I were talking about weather somewhere. I can’t find it and the /search utility isn’t loading for me. This is as good a thread as any. I was wrong thinking TD-14 was his problem and TD-13 would not be. Marco (TD-14) looks like it is hitting LA, MS, and AL now(ish) and TX dodged a bullet. Laura (TD-13) is on Marco’s heels however and most of the TX coast as well central LA coast is at risk for Wednesday landfall. The US Gulf Coast from the Mexico border to the Florida panhandle is going to take a beating at least once if not twice this week.
Stay safe out there.
Peach recall for Mowana product. sigh My SIL just made a peach trifle for my wife’s birthday today. Guess what? sigh
I don’t see any damage that far south on it’s current track with one caveat.
The Hurricane Center and talking tv heads can’t say with any certainty where it’s going. I don’t trust them as they are at the mercy of computer models which are frequently wrong.
Example:
Hurricane Ike 2008. It was supposed to hit Corpus Christi early in the week but the cone of stupidity steadily marched 200 miles to the north until it was cruising up the Houston Ship Channel flattening the Bolivar Peninsula and wrecking Galveston Bay with it’s 22 foot tides and all the other b/s that came with its huge wind field.
Evacuation orders were issued rather late and many were caught off guard on Bolivar or chose to ride it out in the rapidly increasing tides. They were trapped and over forty died there.
Remember the NHC cone is the error for where the center will make landfall. The storm itself is hundreds of miles across.
I know that but let’s assume the center comes in at the Texas/La border as a category three the circulation is not large enough for any effects in S. Texas which is over 500 miles away.
The only storm I’ve seen that can come close was Carla in 1961 a category four with a huge circulation that had its way with the Texas coast.
Or it could hit Corpus Christi as a cat 4. Better safe than sorry.
That’s terrible! I’m glad you are out and safe. Prayers for your house, your neighbors, your neighborhood. Sending all the good vibes.
I am in the same exact boat. I’ve stopped feeling like people will generally do the right thing. The biggest frustrations are neighbors that say all the correct stuff about masks, and then continually have small or larger no mask gatherings in their yard. Also, the neighborhood chats which pop up a thread every 3 days about some local business that isn’t enforcing masks in some way. Then there are 100 comments about “people should do the right thing” vs “masks are stupid and you are all sheep.” And then a moderator removes the thread as if that discussion never happened, only for the whole thing to repeat. It is endless frustration. I most hate it for my kids, who can’t go to school and have a normal, social existence. They are lonely. And I am so sad on their behalf.
Yes. Sigh
Ok, between friends, what really POs me is the ones that LOL at people asking people to do this one little thing. Bc it is so f***ng unbelievable to laugh in the face of all the dead, sick, unemployed. I can’t even. "Muricans are so stupid. I only like the people I like
I appreciate this being among friends, but I also have respected close friends/ family with a different POV. I mostly say I just won’t talk about either “side”. Makes me sad.
Yes, but so is everyone else too.
Yes. Sad is the predominant feeling. I don’t have too many friends with whom I dramatically disagree. But I do have family. And that kills me.
Again, I know that and that scenario would be bad news for us… I’ve been through dozens of these things including three major storms and three biblical flood events from tropical storms/depressions.
As I said before I don’t trust the Hurricane Center so my guard is fully up The Houston area is now under a tropical storm watch and and Galveston Bay area a hurricane watch.
Levi Cowan (TropicalTidbits) is warning that the risk of landfall in Galvaston or even further down the TX coast is still real. Current forecast is for cat 2, but 3 or even 4 is possible if Laura slows over the Gulf and intensifies. Overall looks like today is your last prep day. As usual the biggest impacts will be storm surge and inland flooding.
I can understand some distrust of NHC if all you look at is the forecast cone. Reading the analysis discussions and looking at other data leads me to great respect for those guys although I know the OPC team in Suitland MD better.
As I tell the boating community as I scurry around doing prep (e.g. Isaias) if we’re lucky prep will be practice. If we’re unlucky we’ll be ready. COVID-19 is a bit of a silver lining in that respect as our food stocks and other housekeeping supplies are topped up. For us what is left for storm events is mostly stowing outdoor furniture and refreshing fuel for the generator. It’s a bit of a letdown. grin
When will we next see something like this - the artists sharing a mic, not the crowds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oV2zv6sVD_o
For storm buffs who like to read, I highly recommend a book, Isaac’s Storm.
It’s about the historic hurricane in Galveston in 1900, that killed between 6,000 - 12,000 people. It particularly shines a light on the hubris with which people treated the storm; otherwise countless lives would have been saved.
Read it a couple of times and I found the street address where his house was which was reduced to kindling.
You mention hubris. The Cubans who were leaders in hurricane knowledge warned the at the time infant National Weather Service but were ignored.
