avenue kitchen&bar: ball square, somerville

been meaning to check this place out. had been craving a bacon cheeseburger and their’s had a bacon-onion compote — which looked interesting.

finally made it early (5:30) friday evening. they were pretty booked even that early so i was seated on the patio, which is lovely, and ordered — medium rare. it arrives somewhere between medium and medium well. but the servers aren’t paying too much attention to the patio. to get someone’s attention, i would have had to get up and go back inside. but i was starving, so i ate it.

but what really threw me was the bacon-onion compote. i was expecting a combination of bacon and caramelized onions, but this was so sweet — and there was so much — it totally overwhelmed the burger and cheese.

a real bummer. but i may stop by to pickup some maple chili duck wings.

We’ve had hit or miss meals here. We got take out a few times during the pandemic effort to keep local restaurants afloat, but haven’t been back recently. My DC likes their fried chicken sandwich, but I’m not sure he’s met a fried chicken sandwich he doesn’t like. The family likes the Detroit style pizza, which to me is too caloric to really enjoy properly. It’s not ideal for a gluten-avoidant person so it’s never made it back onto our list. I always have it in the back of my mind for the outdoor dining because the patio is a hidden gem, but now I’m even more hesitant to go back.

Medium rare burgers seem to be a hit or miss proposition at all but the most high end places. Best to hope for a good combination of chuck, brisket, etc., with enough fat to provide flavor and juice even if a tad overcooked.
