Augustine's Salumeria, Mamaroneck

Augustine’s is one of our favorite spots and I was thrilled to see that USA Today listed it as one of the best restaurants in the country! We haven’t been back since the owners opened another spot up county, but we’re definitely returning soon. Highly recommend if you haven’t been!

Even though Augustine’s is close, so probably all I’m interested in, what is the other restaurant that they opened?

It’s called Vida Restaurant. Vidarestaurantny.com

At Augustine’s or Vida?

Augustine’s. My husband took my daughter to Vida with friends when it first opened his description didn’t inspire me to want to go.

I’ve been to Augustine’s several times. While I’ve enjoyed it. The main attraction was a sense of quality and good service. I didn’t see what all the fuss was about, tbh. It made for a good local (close-by) meal, but beyond that……

My brother and SIL live in Mamaroneck. Curious if they’ve been to Augustine’s.

Well, I haven’t seen them there  Incidentally, nice to see this board is not completely dead.

Any suggestions for a quick drink before an 8:30 reservation at Augustine’s? Mamaroneck may as well be Timbuktu for me… I don’t think I’ve been there in 20 years. Something on the nicer side… Great cocktails would be appreciated. Thanks

Why not have a drink at Augustine’s? They have some really good cocktails.

I’d love to but I wonder if it gets crowded? Or maybe is there something in the nearby neighborhood where we could go if we can’t get a spot at the bar?

You’ll probably do just as well by just going to Augustines. not much else around there except one or two nice restaurants. I’d just stick to Augustines. When will you be going?

My SIL raves about the pasta dishes at Augustine’s. She recommends the bar at Modern on the Rails or Le Provençal.

We had a great dinner at Augustine’s last Saturday. We did as roxlet suggested and just got there an hour early and sat at the bar. It wasn’t the best bar setup as the front room is pretty small so it feels a bit cramped, and the lighting isn’t great (it’s very bright) at the bar so their piles of paper and crap by the wall on the right side are visible. (Minor quibble, I know, but I don’t go to a restaurant to see clutter, I can just stay home for that ). The bartender was harried but pleasant - he was the only one making drinks all night for a very crowded front room and what I assume was also a crowded back room. We chatted a bit when things slowed down and he was very friendly.

We started with a couple of cocktails which can’t really compare to some of our favorite spots up-county but the salami platter more than made up for it. They accidentally gave us an extra meat, which delighted my husband, and they brought the cheese out that they forgot quickly - a hard cheese with espresso and lavender (odd sounding but delicious). I would love to see more variety with the cheeses offered and some more accoutrements would be nice too. Anyway the cacio e pepe zeppole were so ridiculously amazing that they could have served anything or nothing on that meat and cheese plate and I wouldn’t have cared. I feel like they are more gougeres than zeppole??? Just absolutely amazing little crusty warm bundles oozing with delicious cheese and soft dough inside.

We made our way to our table for dinner and enjoyed the radicchio salad - I always forget I don’t really like radicchio for its bitterness but the cheese and whatever dressing it came with balanced it out a bit and it was a nice light start to the meal, especially after devouring the gougeres and meat and cheese. We split the papperdelle with duck ragu and the corti (short rib with cherries and red wine and served with mashed potatoes), along with their crispy Brussels. Both the entrees were excellent. The pasta was cooked perfectly and the duck ragu was rich but well balanced. The short rib was tender and the sauce was very complex and married well with the meat. The Brussels were a bit spicy but I loved the crispiness.

We took some of the short rib home because we needed to save room for one of the many desserts we’d seen other tables get. Were the desserts not all $15(!!) each we surely would have gotten two. It took us about ten minutes to compromise on which to get, but we settled on the pistachio cannoli. It comes with two full size cannolis, which are made untraditionally but deliciously with pizzelle shells. I found cream to be delicious but definitely on the sweeter side and I couldn’t finish mine. (My daughter ate the rest leftover for breakfast.). Next time we’ll go for the peanut butter panna cotta or the smore semifreddo, although the waitress also raved about the bread pudding.

This was a 30+ min drive for us so I can’t say we will be back often but we will definitely return, maybe for brunch with our daughter. It reminds me of Freddy’s a bit in Pleasantville - not a lot of unnecessary frills but good food made with quality ingredients. I also found the staff to be very friendly. Will try to attach some photos.
