Ararat [SF, Tenderloin]

Turkish (?) wraps, plates, etc. Very good – iskender kebab plate was generous and properly buttered. Take or leave the pita. P2 was very happy with her mix gyro plate – very fresh salad, nice purple shredded lightly pickled cabbage, solid chicken bouillon rice. Haven’t tried the desserts yet but am excited to taste the “Cyprus dessert” – walnut cake, mahlebi, shredded coconut and almonds. Didn’t try the kunefe this time but will go back for it. Lots of 20 something guys speaking what sounded like Turkish to me. Free and tasty tea. $20/pp before tax & tip.

4/5 - jog, don’t walk.

I’m a big fan of this place. I almost always get the German Style Gemuse kebab. Same gyro meat, but on a large tasty bun (i’m guessing they make the buns because it is not a normal sized hamburger bun), but it includes feta and what the menu calls fried vegetables, but is more like stewed eggplant and peppers.
I also think they make one of the best spanakopitas I’ve had. Heavy on the sesame seeds on the outside and not made with filo dough.
This place does a brisk business with expats so they must be doing something right.
There are off-menu items (some kind of stew and a rice plate) that they are more than happy to serve anyone who asks.
