Yes, that is why I suggested making up the dough in advance. You could make up a second batch of dough just to show the students how to make it up, but have the original dough ready to go.
The students could form the pretzels, boil them for 2 minutes in a baking soda solution (in a braiser or similar), then into the oven for 12 minutes.
As for the shaping, it doesn’t have to be perfect – the odd shapes could be both fun and creative.
Interesting idea – I’ve seen shortcut recipes that start with ready pizza dough too, which is pretty inexpensive and saves pre-work.
The kids would probably get a kick out of shaping their own pretzels (nothing to say they have to be pretzel shaped ), and there could be a boiling station setup.
Would be even easier to have them all make pretzel nuggets, and then have a topping / dips bar – like for cupcakes, but could be both sweet and savory (channeling Auntie Annies )
All of this talk of pretzels reminded me that I used to make Soft Pretzels for Sunshine. A hot soft pretzel reminds her of New York (where she lived for a while).
Any who, it also reminded me that I had purchased some Pretzel Salt. As I stare at this 5 pound bag of pretzel salt, I’m now pondering “What was I thinking?? 5 pounds??” I guess there much have been a deal on the larger bag and I ordered it.
