I did not know the plateau was typical but that does make sense. I went from 244 to 209 so I lost 35 pounds. And I am holding around 210 or so. Or I was for the 3 weeks after my last pen ran out. If I can stay below 220 without Ozempic, I will probably not get another pen, even though I really like being at 210 and 205 would be even better.
Denise, I have told my story about drinking the taso de cafe cubano quite a few times, and every third or fourth time someone admits that it happened to them too. It is a fairly common mistake, but as you say, a mistake we only make the one time.
I understand from several friends who are endocrinologists, most people plateau after a 20 lb loss.
Welp, I guess Iâll have to do the rest of the weight loss the old fashioned way, with grit and determination⌠![]()

IIRC from endless WW meetings, 20 lbs/10kg/1.5 stone works out to be a significant percentage of body fat for most people. Any time you lose more than about 5% of your starting body weight, your survival mechanisms set in and put things on pause until the system can reset to the new normal.
No idea whether thatâs scientifically true or not, but it makes some sense (but the 20 lb plateau has seemed to hold for my body)
agree.
that is why wegovy and ozempic are important tools for many ppl fighting the battle.
I just cant get on board with them. Its ok to plateau. It also teaches you to readjust your eating habits while things adjust
Every single person I know who has stopped taking any of these has gained the weight back.
Exactly. Among other side effects. My doctor straight up said that she would prefer that we get my blood chemistry right first, and to try lifestyle changes before we jump on the forever prescriptions
itâs a âyou and your doctor decide what is best for youâ decision. I am also working at it through diet and exercise.
I am glad the scientists and medical researchers are working on the problem through medicine, as well.
Wegovy just came out with a pill, now approved in the US. It will cost $150 without insurance. WaPo gift link:
Iâm using it for diabetes control, the weight loss was an added bonus. YMMV
Some side effects are only found over time with phase 4 (post approval data, e.g. vioxx, baycol etc). The pill has the same active ingredient as the injectable but in very different concentrations as the absorption of peptides through oral administration is very different (lower) than through injection. With injectables you have plenty of long-term phase 4 data on safety but not with a pill. Continuing the injectable might be the safer option for now
Right before and during COVID19 we went on Noom. We lost weight in a consistent and orderly way and hit our targets in a reasonable period. We kept it off due chiefly to the fact that we had altered our approach to eating. I have no idea what Noom is like now, but I have seen enough to know it has changed. All meals were fairly balanced, a bit more vegetable heavy. Protein servings were smaller but still plenty. This has been pretty easy to keep following.
I was happy with Noom until the app died and they had no fix. They wanted me to go back to rhe beginning and start the program all over againâŚsix weeks of lessons and tracking . They gave me a full refund with no qiestions asked, but Im having trouble trusting the process enough to try again.
I was not impressed with Noom at all, and I kinda thought they lost their cred entirely once they introduced the new weight-loss meds to their âprogram.â
Itâs a glorified calorie-tracking app sprinkled with pop-psychology quizzes. I know exactly one person (a guy, of course) who kept the weight off after Noom; everyone else gained it back over time.
I also never trusted their data base with widely ranging calorie counts ![]()
I agree it is a glorified calorie tracking tool, but the daily pop psychology, insights into the ways we process foods, etc. provided a type of reinforcement if you read them regularly and incorporated them into your own processes. Unfortunately most people read that stuff, nod, and move on. Of course that same information is out there without using Noom for people to read, nod, and move on or to use.
I have been tracking with MyFitnessPal for 17 years. I tried Noom for a month about 7 years ago, but I found it too Pollyanna intrusive for me.
I tried to convince myself that I was enjoying those quizzes. If it had had any impact on my weight I mighta stuck with it, but I find counting calories tedious â especially when the data base seems less than reliable (FWIW, I always used the highest number just to be on the safe side).
I have a pretty good handle on my calorie intake on a daily basis without having to log every morsel, but I am also no longer obsessed with any particular number on the scale. ![]()
Strength, mobility, and flexibility are far more important for me at this point in my life.
