Just wondering where my best bets might be outside of SF proper.
Koi Palace, H&L, Hong Kong Bistro, Joy Luck Palace, Kowloon Kitchen, etc. are all good choices.
Just depends on what you are looking as “wok hei” is such a broad term. Sort of like asking for the best al dente pasta in the Peninsula.
I’m looking for that smokiness that comes with very high wok heat and a place that will get the food to me quicky enough that it doesn’t dissipate. Beef chow fun is probably what’ll be ordering. I’d like an exceptional version of that. Maybe other things, too.
Now I’m craving Beef Chow Fun.
Same. It’s a great dish for wok hei.
The now defunct U-Lee at Jackson and Hyde had good wok hei that you could taste even for simple dishes like choy sum and chicken rice plate. They were suppose to relocate to the Richmond district many years ago but never did. The family grew up did other things but I recall reading about how the wok was coming with them, if/when they moved. They were known for their pot stickers.
p.s. haven’t had a good plate of chow fun in a long time. definitely something not made at home usually.
Your best bet is probably Porridge and Things in Milbrae, or Fat Wong’s Kitchen in San Bruno, or for something upscale, Palette Tea Garden in San Mateo does a fantastic version of beef chow fun with Wagyu cuts that does not short change the “hei” in wok hei at all.
Thanks for the suggestions and the earlier suggestions. There looks to be some good options. Porridge and Things or Fat Wong’s would probably work well because I also want to have porridge/congee somewhere. Wagyu beef chow fun at Palette Tea Garden is really tempting. That’s probably not very common. I won’t be in the area for quite a while, so I have plenty of time to mull things over.

I remember when Oakland changed its name to San Francisco Bay, I did not know Oakland has changed its name to Peninsula.
Not on the peninsula but the chefs at Dragon Beaux also get good wok hei on their chow fun. Damn now I’m craving it too.
