Never did have a chance to check out Amma while we were in town. @Bigley9 do I remember correctly that you’ve been? Thoughts?

I have been and thought it was really good - I don’t know my way around Indian food though so I couldn’t tell you what I ordered  I have been intending to go back but once they made the best of list I figured I needed to wait a bit.

Yeah those darn ‘best’ lists have ruined many a place — if only by making it impossible to get in, e.g. Mawn, Tabachoy, etc.

Happened to be walking by Amma today right at noon, saw it wasn’t too crowded and decided to grab lunch. Had the Medhu Vadai which were okay, I expected them to be more flavorful with the list of spices. The warm dipping side was really good. I don’t think I’d reorder. I also ordered the Veg Kothu Parotta. This was extraordinary! It was accompanied by some sort of curry sauce (but no tomato) and riata. I only ate half of it and I am looking forward to the leftovers but I should have asked for more of that sauce!

I assume that you are speaking of Sambar that was served with the Medhu Vada, more of a Vegetable-Lentil Stew than a Dipping Sauce(not that you can’t or shouldn’t dip you your Vada, Dosa or Idly into it :slightly_smiling_face:) . It should also have had Coconut Chutney and Tomato or Onion Chutney served with it as well traditionally, which are more of a Condiment/“Dip”/Sauce.

I am an Indian food novice. If they don’t tell me exactly what I am eating I get it wrong. The warm side didn’t have any real solids in it, but :woman_shrugging: there were 3 cold dipping sauces , one green, one white, and one red!
Can you tell me about the curry-ish sauce with the parotta? That was so good!

" 3 cold dipping sauces"
Probably plain Coconut(white), Mint-Cilantro Coconut(green) and Tomato (red) Chutneys, but that is just what is most typical. They may have been different.

Judging from their Menu the Gravy served with the Veg Kothu Parotta could have been a Kurma but you would have to ask them.
I am on the West Coast otherwise I would be happy to go there and confirm it!
Hope you have fun exploring South Indian Food!
