Aldi — YAY / NAY / MMMMMKAY 2026

It’s a new year, with hopefully many new exciting products coming our way. Please share your winners, losers, and errrrything-in-betweeners here

I picked up a few more bags of the black tiger shrimp, as they sometimes stop selling them after any holiday season.

This is a new-to-me product I can already picture with some fresh tagliatelle :face_savoring_food:

Truffles in olive oil with artificial truffle flavor - 2,4-Dithiapentane tends to overwhelm any natural truffle flavor and makes everything taste like “truffle” fries in restaurants. Did they list what truffles they used, e.g. Chinese ?

I threw away the packaging, and the jar has no information other than the expiration date, which is some time in 2028.

But given your mad research skillz no doubt you can find out yourself if you feel so inclined.

Unfortunately, I didn’t catch that it contained artificial truffle flavor, but I’m confident we’ll survive whatever meal I end up making with it.

Relax- everything will be fine

I was never worried, trust.

Phew!

I saw those, but opted out. Will be interesting to hear your take.

I wonder if one rinsed off the olive oil if it would get rid of the icky artificial flavoring?

Either way, I wasn’t planning on spooning them into my mouf unadulterated. Might still be remotely edible with a little cream tossed with pasta

Ve shall see!

Maybe? I was going to try them in scrambled eggs.

So…. you did buy them?

I don’t think the artificial truffle flavor is necessarily “icky.” I’m sure we’ve all enjoyed many a plate of “truffle” fries that were nothing more than fries sprinkled with a bit of fake truffle oil. Dressed with a bit of parm of parsley as seems to be the usual, it’s pretty tasty. It’s not fresh shaved white truffle, but whatever. Set expectations appropriately and enjoy your purchase.

Well, I for one hate that artificial stuff on pretty much anything (but especially fries) & would not have bought the product had I seen the ‘small’ print. That said, I will enjoy it — one way or another.

Gotta read the fine print if you want to be an ubersnob

Preferring the real deal over artificial (not to mention over-the top) flavor has absolutely nothing to do with snobbery. It is but a personal preference, like everything we discuss here.

I’ve not tried these yet, but I’m looking forward to it

No. I kept picking it up and putting it back that I just finally gave up on my own indecision!

Now THOSE I have zero doubt are good. I buy their 70% as my dark chocolate fix (and I luuuuvvvvv their sea salt version)
