A weekend in ATX

My brother and sister in law came from Boston for the weekend and posed an interesting challenge. They love Mexican, especially mole, but cannot take much (any) spiciness. Our next door neighbors dine out much more than we do and are always recommending Curra’s. We went to the one on Oltorf. My opinion was that is was slightly better than ho hum. For breakfast I made my brother and egg and cheese taco using HEB tortillas and eggs, Tillamook Mexican four cheese blend, and HEB mild fresh salsa. The sister in law cannot eat eggs. Her taco had refried beans, avocado, and cotija. Lunch was Cuantos. Dinner was Manuel’s. I forget how terrific that place is. Their mole is much more subtle than most. Their potato pancakes with corn in them and a tart tomato sauce are a terrific appetizer. We took a break from Mexican, driving out 71 to see bluebonnets. There were almost none, but dropping into Opie’s is always fun, especially on the weekend, when they serve butter beans. The last meal was Jack Allen’s south. Everyone was ready for salads.
