9 Tips to Stretch Your Food Budget

If you guys haven’t heard of Too Good to Go, check it out. It’s an app that lists leftover food at a big discount. You pay via phone. Ethnic groceries, a lot of bakeries and lots of other stuff, some promotional. I believe it’s international. Lots of choices in metro areas. There’s a lot of baked goods because they go bad fast, lots and lots of donuts but also Acme Breads uses it and you 3-4 loafs of different varieties for $5.99. Whole Foods uses it too.

A friend told me about this and I went and signed up. Imagine my surprise and disappointment when I found that literally the only options within 10 miles of me is Circle K. I don’t buy fresh food at Circle K. I cant imagine how dismal the leftovers are at the end of a shift. Those taquitos have 25,000 miles on them!

Most of what I get from TGTG are baked goods, but I’m trying dinner from a Yemeni place in the Tenderloin tonight and we’ll see how it goes.

I did it a couple of times. WF near me, got a big bag of sandwiches that were all expired the day before. I ate part of one and it was too soggy to take seriously. Wound up pulling some of the meat off the rest and binning the remains. Kind of felt sad. Another time, local bakery, I got a huge box of absolutely beautiful pastries, still in what I’d call basically perfect condition. Amazing deal, but my waistline doesn’t need that kind of treatment so I’ve not returned.

My daughter fools around with this … I think she likes the intrigue, surprise of it all.

The best one she ever got was from Luke’s Local on Cole, a very rare find.

I cut back on Acme bread for the same reason. Basically first quality bread and first quality weight gain.

I’m stingy on my phone storage space and try not to add an app unless I absolutely know it’ll get used occasionally, and that the app has a decent interface. TGTG does seem to have website version, for those who want to pre-check out what is available. In the Boston area where I am, there does appear to be non-bakery offerings too, but noticing those are going quickly or sold out already.
