No major surprises here, but tickled to see my personal food mantra in the third paragraph:
Ask any reputable dietitian or nutrition scientist about how to eat healthfully, and they will probably tell you to avoid dieting.
Many diets emphasize restriction, whether it’s of calories, carbohydrates, fats or something else. And that’s not a healthy strategy, said Alison Brown, a nutrition researcher at the National Institutes of Health. Diets like these can cause you to miss out on the range of nutrients your body requires, she said.
A much better way to maintain healthy eating habits, she added, is to focus on foods that are not only nourishing, but also bring you joy.

I remember when I was first diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, I asked the specialist nurse about diet. She said I should keep eating a pretty much normal diet but not so much of it, keeping a particular eye on carbs and sugars. That was it.
This. This is key.
When I crave something not-so-nourishing that brings me joy, I try to search out a high quality alternative. Think local creamery ice cream instead of a carton from the supermarket. Or homemade cookies (preferably made with one of my nieces) instead of a bakery cake. Because there is nothing more nourishing to the soul than the love and extra chocolate chips that a 6-year-old puts into a cookie she helped bake.
Diet fads, corporate food infrastructure and American consumer culture are all linked. Eat all you want…just diet later. It’s an endless cycle. Diet industry is worth about $300 billion globally…and looks to grow like crazy with GLP drugs. Meanwhile food industry keeps inventing new products to break you.
I went to a Dietian awhile back and she said elimination is difficult, consume less or find substitutes that you still like. Agree eating something you actually like ( in moderation) keeps you from going crazy or thinking about it.
I find when I get busy that it helps to be unafraid of being a weirdo. When I need a snack I’ll munch on a bag of arugula or a box of sprouts. I don’t have time to eat a proper salad but this satisfies.
