Yay Patagonian scallops! Right from the freezer into a medium-low pan with bacon grease, just a couple of minutes until just defrosted and not translucent. Remove them quick–they’ll keep cooking a bit more.
Meh to the Queso Fresco. Completely bland but somehow has a bit of a bitter aftertaste, and somehow very dry despite having as much liquid in the package as a block of Feta. Maybe I got a bad batch bc I seem to be an outlier on this according to other reviews I’ve seen
Double yay on the Patagonian scallops. They are small size so easy to manage the doneness and they are so sweet.
Ooh that sounds good! The other two in that line are delicious — elderflower lemon and strawberry rhubarb.
YEA – Super Colossal Black Tiger Shrimp
I thought these were just a seasonal item over the holidays, but they’re still available. Size is fantastic, but texture and flavor are also great.
Do you have to peel them?
Yes, easy peel, deveined. Given the size, it took me only a couple of minutes to peel off the split shells.
YEA for the Sparkling Lychee Juice.
Very fragrant as soon as you pop the can open, not too sweet (though I do prefer all these sparkling juices mixed with plain sparkling water), great on its own, but would be a terrific mixer for gin or vodka.
Thanks to @ChristinaM for mentioning them, or I would have missed it. When I asked the guy restocking that area if it was in store yet, he looked at me blankly and said he’d never heard of it. A few minutes later, after poking around the shelves, I found an empty box of lychee juice cans behind another flavor, and showed it to him. He looked at the cartons in front of him, opened one, and lo and behold – there they were.
Yay!
I don’t particularly care for lychees, but it’s amazing how similar their aroma is to that of elderflowers.
Now that you mention it, I can see that!
I like lychees, though am not obsessed. I eat a few every season (like mangoes).
Oh my, I’m obsessed with this drink too. I love lychee flavor, and this one tastes pretty good without tasting artificial. I bought three packs of them this last week.
A hearty YEA for the new Lefse / Norwegian potato flatbreads. They’re somewhere between a crepe and a tortilla. Great with smoked salmon and cream cheese or mascarpone, or many other savory and sweet takes.
Measured YEA for the new shrimp chips — they’re sweeter than I expected, but they would be good with a spicy dip (which I’ll try if there are any left when I stop eating them straight from the bag).
Disappointed MEH for the Egyptian Baladi Bread. They’re basically very thin pitas. Great form factor, they look really delicious, and the texture is really interesting. (Just a touch mochi-esque.) But flavor??? Someone forgot to add the salt. And I detected zero sourdough character. I’m annoyed because I feel like this could have been an amazing product and it just doesn’t get there.
The only time I really ever get a sourdough character in store-bought breads is the loaves from San Francisco’s Boudin Bakery. I’ve tried several others (Jessica’s Brick Oven, La Brea - both supermarket-bought breads, the first being local to me) and while they’re OK, they’re not sour enough for me. There are many bakeries around me that I haven’t tired. I know Pizzelle’s in Lowell sells it; just haven’t been up there recently. IIRC, theirs is pretty good as well. But nothing beat Boudin.
Except if you’re in the Bay Area, lots of local bakeries make strong sourdoughs that blow Boudin out of the water. ![]()
What do you like?
I buy Acme Sour Baguette but I don’t think the sourdough taste is strong.
This is our local MA source (we have another one in RI).
