Comal offers its annual Mexican-inspired Passover dinners on April 6-7. Comal follows Sephardic traditions for Passover, including kitniyot (rice and legumes). The menu includes rock cod “gefilte” fish cakes with chipotle aioli, lamb barbacoa quesadillas, caldo de pollo with jalapeno matzah balls, beef brisket in adobo and a Cara-Cara orange-rose raspado with tequila whipped crema for dessert. Reserve tickets early as they usually sell out. 2020 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley.

KQED. Luke, Thien and Briana have late-night Santa Maria-style tri-tip for $20 at Harry’s Hofbrau, 14900 E. 14th St., San Leandro.

Excerpt:

My favorite, by far, was the Santa Maria–style tri tip — a nod to California’s own homegrown style of barbecue — which Harry’s serves as a special on Friday nights. Even carved off the small nub of the roast left over at the end of the night, the thin slices of beef were still perfectly tender and pink, with a pronounced smoky flavor that lingered on the tongue. It was fantastic soaked in au jus, with a dab of the bottled horseradish cream available on each table.

Several outlets are reporting that Trumer Pils brewery in Berkeley will be closing. They were bought by another brewer with headquarters in Paso Robles, and will be moving production there. Paywalled Chronicle article:

There are many brewery closures in the Bay area and nationwide as it was to be expected with so many breweries opening over the last 10-15 years. At least with Firewalker there is high hope that the quality of the brewing transition to PR won’t change the quality of the pilsner

Firestone, isn’t it?

Almanac Brewing in Alameda is first to use direct air capture of CO2 to carbonate its beer.

I went the next day because I was in the area. It was pretty nuts, but I knew what I was looking for so I was in and out rather quickly. Definitely want to visit the food court when things have calmed down; I shop at the DSW in that same plaza, so I’m there often enough.

Local anchovy season in a boom and starts soon, fresh available at J&P Bait, Pier 47 SF

Excerpt:

Stuart Brioza and Nicole Krasinski of State Bird Provisions have built an entire restaurant around them — The Anchovy Bar — but you’ll also find the little guys dusted in cornmeal for “fries with eyes” at Nopa Fish, used for jeotgal and fish sauce at San Ho Won, tempura-fried at Nisei, cured at Rich Table, and fried with preserved Meyer lemon aioli and fresh horseradish at Scoma’s.

To get the freshest anchovies, stop by J & P Bait(opens in new tab)**, open to the public seven days a week. They’re $30 for “half a scoop” (6 pounds).
