Maggie Carroll got the idea to host a Trader Joe’s matchmaking event on a whim after her friend mentioned they had exchanged phone numbers with someone at a TJ’s. She expected 50 or 100 people would attend, and received 500 RSVPs. The crowd later moved to a nearby park.

How Dzui’s became San Jose’s favorite durian dessert shop.

Excerpt:

As for his family’s famous bánh pía, Thai sells a few different variations on the treat, including a savory version that has a char siu pork filling with crunchy bits of candied winter melon that act as a wonderful counterpoint. But in his view, a truly traditional bánh pía never omits the durian.

Ramadan 2026

This week starts the holy month of Ramadan — and here are the spots where you can break your fast in the Bay Area. (Tashdique Mehtaj Ahmed/Getty Images

I’m always torn about whether to eat at Muslim-owned restaurants during Ramadan. My shopping route tomorrow takes me near an excellent Yemeni hole-in-the-wall–should I have lunch there?

A quick walkthrough should allow you to gauge the scene. Some may be closed during daylight hours, others may be takeout only. A search on the topic should yield suggested guidelines or just ask.

I don’t have personal knowledge on the matter.

Luke and Thien have late-night pho at the new Turtle Tower in the Marina at 3145 Fillmore SF, open until 3 am on Fri and Sat nights.

Excerpt:

The worry, of course, with the opening of a “fancier” Turtle Tower in a non-Asian neighborhood, is that the food is going to get whitewashed and watered down. Indeed, the first thing we noticed is that the menu didn’t list the “deluxe” version of the restaurant’s famous chicken phở (listed as “phở gà lòng” in the old days), which came with giblets and skin for a boost of texture and earthy oomph. When we asked our server about it, she smiled sheepishly and explained that, at least for now, they weren’t offering that version. “We weren’t sure if ‘Marina people’ would eat giblets,” she said. Which is, well, fair enough. (She noted, though, that a lot of Asian customers had been asking for them.)

The agony of being a restaurant reviewer.

Excerpt:

What I didn’t anticipate was how, in the age of social media, every published word would be weaponized. It wasn’t just against me, but by readers against each other, by chefs against their competitors, by everyone trying to get a slightly bigger slice of social (and sometimes actual) capital.

Belotti, the exquisite Northern Italian restaurant in Rockridge, has just celebrated its 10th year in business with a new, lovely parklet built along the Hudson St. side of the bldg.

It remains a very small space, comparable in size to the equally good and tiny Peruvian restaurant Pucquio, which is down the street (towards Broadway). 2-4 are fine, 6 are tight; any more than that and a group would be more comfortable outside than inside.

If you have never been, this is elegant, light, magnificent pastas. We love their salads and the spinach souffle starter. Their entrees are good, but the stars are the pastas. They’re served in proper size portions, not the humongous “heaps of noodles and an ocean of sauce” most Americans think of when ordering pasta.

We usually skip entrees entirely and simply order two different pasta dishes per person, apiece. DO NOT miss the agnolotti (the casoncelli is similar and altho excellent, the agnolotti is even better). The polenta-filled pasta and the potato gnocchi are also our favs. Make sure to have bread handy to sop up Mikele Belotti’s divine buttery sauces!

Note for those who love anchovies: Mikele’s anchovy pasta is VERY salty. We loved the intense flavor but the salt in this dish was just too much for us; we’ve been on low-salt diets for decades.
