SFChron Critic Cesar Hernandez enjoys some of the new vendors at IKEA’s Saluhall in downtown SF – especially Smish Smash, which opened there last year, a Top 100 restaurant; along with newcomer Izzy & Wooks, a Filipino fusion kiosk that shows considerable promise. And the shuttered bars are set to spring back to life as well:

That was very kind of her. Though why did she need to drive from SF to San Jose to get banh mi? Thought there are a bunch in the Tenderloin itself.

From Binondo to the Bay Area.

EST. 1990 • A FAMILY LEGACY

It all started in 1990, when Tony Lim opened the first Ling Nam Noodle House with a simple dream — to bring the comforting flavors of Binondo, Manila’s Chinatown, to the Bay Area.

From the beginning, Ling Nam has been about feel-good Filipino-Chinese food — bowls of steaming House Special Mami, savory Beef and Chicken Mami, hearty Beef Stew Rice, and the iconic Asado, Bola-Bola Siopao, and Siomai that remind everyone of home.

Leona explores Stockton.

From YouTube:

Stockton’s food scene doesn’t get nearly enough credit, and this video is proof. I’m taking you to three incredible and unexpected restaurants right here in Stockton, CA: a pink French cocktail lounge straight out of a Wes Anderson film, a brand new Nordic-Filipino fusion café opened by a Filipina chef with 20 years of experience running a restaurant in Denmark, and an authentic German restaurant that made Yelp’s Top 30 List of German Eateries in America. Plus a little bonus from one of our region’s many roadside farm stands. :cherries:

After watching the video and reading reviews online, I suspect The Rose & Tail Club is a bit too precious for me, and I can’t imagine checking them out.

I’m putting Nordic Bites on my list of places to try. The location has been death for a whole string of places, most recently a coffee shop, possibly several different iterations. Since it’s two doors down from my favorite Japanese store, it’ll be easy for me to build it into an errands trip. It kind of illustrates, tho, how much I operate on autopilot, because I’ve been in that center at least four times since Nordic Bites opened and didn’t even notice that they’d taken over from the most recent sad coffee place!

Lastly, Mrs. ricepad and I were just talking about German Guys the other day. I think about German Guys a lot, generically thinking we should go there sometime soon. Every time we go, though, I look at the menu and think, “I could do most of this myself with little fuss or bother, and it’d be a lot cheaper!” Everything is good - we have never had a bad meal there in the 10-12 times we’ve been - but the things we like best are a couple of the sides. The warm sauerkraut with mushrooms is Mrs. ricepad’s favorite, and I could bathe in a vat of their bigos. Ady and Kate are warm hosts, and every one of the servers is top shelf. German Guys will probably stay in our rotation, but I can’t really say why.
