Years ago we owned a wine and cheese retail shop. The American Cheese Society was a terrific source of information for us and we even went to their annual convention (in Louisville) one year. It’s in a different city each year. The educational (seminars and lectures) and networking opportunities there were invaluable. We even attended the ‘after party’ following the cheese awards judging. You could taste hundreds of cheese products all in one hotel ballroom.

It’s great to see a new place coming in. And this is going to be next to the new Everett and Jones BBQ, so double awesome!

Looks like that Horn’s revamp is in trouble. Public/private partnerships always seem to work nicely for the ‘private’, and the ‘public’ is left holding the bag.

Oh no! Is there an update regarding this re-opening describedin the article?

Despite the setback, Behrmann pointed to progress in the Railroad Street corridor, including the anticipated opening of Horn Barbecue, which will take over the former Slow & Low space. He said Horn Barbecue recently conducted a hiring event and plans to open soon

I’m confused about the names. Both “Slow and Go” and Horn’s are a no-go? Are they the same folks?

Not food, but I just saw this about the zoo.

Would be great to see finally some doner kebab in the US - the few attempts before, e.g. weren’t too successful. The photos look way oversauced and it’s not great to use chicken (instead of the more “traditional” beef and lamb but still worth a try

I suspect it was also about costs too. I feel doner kebap really needs the stronger beef & lamb flavor to break through the pile of veggies and bread.

Summer Bay Area gardening.

From KQED.

Succulent tomatoes that burst in your mouth. Enough zucchini to feed an army. Corn, sunflowers, and more. The summer garden has much to offer, but Bay Area summer gardening is a bit different. Some of us stay socked in fog and marine layer for weeks at a time, while others are dealing with hotter temperatures. We talk about the summer garden, take your questions, and hear what’s thriving in your plot.

Guests:

Flora Grubb, owner, Flora Grubb Gardens Plant Nursery

Leslie Bennett, owner and creative director, Pine House Edible Gardens; co-author, “Garden Wonderland: Create Life-Changing Outdoor Spaces for Beauty, Harvest, Meaning and Joy”

Allyson Greenlon, master gardener and urban ag coordinator, UC Cooperative Extension - Agriculture and Natural Resources in Alameda County
