I was at Brennan’s s the last week…and turned around after seeing the line. It was packed with an hour plus wait. Lots from the salt and pepper set. Usually got the turkey leg.
I remember Chicken Coop on Taravel.
Harry’s Hofbrau is still open in San Leandro but not my favorite.

Wally’s is an absolute treasure. It was a regular lunch spot when I worked in emeryville. You get a lovely little cup of a cumin-heavy lentil soup and a piece of flaky homemade baklava with your meal.
The garlic chicken sandwich is amazing but will leave you with breath that can kill roses at 10 paces.
I really need to give the one up here in Rocklin a try.
There used to be a great Afghan restaurant in the Montclair district on Mountain Blvd c. 1990. I had some wonderful meals there, but before that, the Khyber Pass on Telegraph must have been the first and imho, the best! My introduction to Afghani food and the world beyond…
There used to be a Jade Garden or a similar named strip mall buffet/ restaurant up there. I think they had a sister restaurant in Vallejo. Great silver wrapped chicken. A long time ago, D.O. Mills in old town and Big Yellow House somewhere in Sacto were fun. But that was a long time ago and far away.
SF Chronicle reported today 2/14 that Kowbird, from chef-owner Matt Horn of Horn Barbecue fame, closed in early January 2025, according to Joe Ernst, whose Oakland real estate development company srmErnst owns the building at 1733 Peralta St., Oakland.
Horn intends to focus on the BBQ side, having opened in Lafayette and is currently working on a Sacramento location.
Apparently the guy Horn is partnering w/ in Elk Grove (Hargis) has a pretty shady legal past, having had a number of failed businesses/food fests and getting big loan from the city of Elk Grove that there’s some controversy over.
And Horn sounds like his operational record (wage theft lawsuits) isn’t great either.
Mike Lim Travels at Pea Soup Andersen’s in Santa Nella, off Highway 5 near Los Baños, eating the Monte Cristo, roasted fried chicken and pea soup. Andersen’s is also in Buellton and has been around since 1924.
Nomadic Kitchen (Turkish), Varam (Indian) and Cravingz (ice cream) all debuted last summer. Cardamomo arrived in November, on a stretch of Broadway that is closed to cars.
