2025 Food Crawl - Osaka Day 3........Dinner: KANIKANIJO…….my first all Crab Kaiseki experience!

This Crab dinner was another one of my long anticipated meals on this week-long Japan food crawl. After hearing so many stories about this unique Japanese culinary specialty, my wife and I finally managed to experience this hallmark feast for the first time!. Our timing was also spot on, since October-November is the start of the Japanese crab season, thus ensuring we’ll be savouring some top notched ingredients!

For us two novices, every dish presented………..from crab leg sashimi dipped in crab brains, baked in the shell, to Charbroiled, Tempura, Shabu-Shabu, crab broth rice congee … .etc, were all eye opener and loaded with wow- factors! Every course was unique and delicious in its own special way. Most dishes were curated and served by friendly, helpful and attentive servers, with a few components left for us to cook and play around with!! For me, the hands-down winner was the crispy and light crab croquettes packed with crab meat in a delightful umami laden crab flavour cream sauce! Soooo good and super addictive! Imagine munching non-stop on those whilst watching a ball game on TV!..Heaven!!
Initially, with such an attractive cost base, when compared to our North American pricing, I was planning to add an optional order of King Crab legs to our meal. However, the amount of food provided was simply too overwhelming, leaving us with absolutely no room to try anything else…..even if offered for FREE! 😜🤣

The next day, we walked by the fish monger at Takashimaya’s basement food hall and saw some freshly arrived Snow Crab selling for less than CAD $3 each! Absolutely unreal!!..considering Loblaws is currently selling Canadian Snow Crab at $15 each!!
