2025 - Extended Orient Food Crawl - Kyoto, Day 3.........Neighbourhood walk and early lunch at Nishiki Food Market

We were told the secret in avoiding the busy, luncheon, tourist crowd at the popular Nishiki food market, is to arrive early, preferably just after opening. Taking advantage of a glorious, sunny fall morning, we got up early, walked around the scenic neighbourhood, before heading over and making a timely arrival at the Food Market for an early lunch.

The weather was still pretty warm and hence sadly, there were literally no signs of any fall colours!

Though we found the market interesting, buzzling with activities and attractions and filled with a huge variety of food offerings. However, due to the touristy nature of this popular place, prices charged by merchants were all marked up and on the pricey side. As such, we were cautious and took our time in picking selectively items to eat for lunch.

Overall, our impression of this food related encounter was ‘ OK Lah! ‘…nothing stood out as special or worth writing home about……. Except for those mega-bucks, Hokkaido Bafun Uni and that ‘ reservoir ‘ of soy sauce marinated Ikura!! :face_savoring_food:
Maybe for the novice tourists visiting a typical Japanese food market, this - ‘ Tsujiki market like ‘ experience might seem eye-opening, appealing, impressive and memorable?!
