I’m really enjoying “The Midnight Diners” - doubt I would have found it if not for your links: thank you!

Chron’ s article on it.

I remember going in college and yes, the $7 beers were a shock in the 80s. We did exactly what the Chron article suggested…bought the beers and nursed them for the 50 min rotation. I think they’re just going to charge for the ride now, on top of food?
Sold out: On May 5 at Popoca, the second El Otro Lado dinner will be held, an evening of food, drink and art with a focus on the indigenous culinary traditions from Mexico and Central America.

Berkeley is very excited about this newcomer to the Gilman District, now serving Bangalore-style street food for take-out or patio dining out of the corner restaurant most recently home to Lulu.

Luke and Thien eat Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup at Lounge Chinatown Oakland until 2:30 am.
Lounge Chinatown is open 10:30 a.m.–2:30 a.m. daily at 366 8th St. in Oakland.
Luke:
The first thing you notice about Lounge Chinatown is the decor, which is so hiply and aggressively Asia-fied in its aesthetics that 20-year-old me, at the very height of my AZN pride, would have eaten it up — all sleek red leather booths, lucky cat figurines and sexily back-lit Taiwanese whiskey bottles. Five or six different kinds of light fixtures, all designed to resemble various paper lanterns, bask the dining room in a nightclub-like glow. Meanwhile, a mural running the length of the restaurant depicts an unidentified Asian night market scene in such a way that the night market looks like the coolest damn place in the world.

SFGate: The app that saved Bay Area shoppers $23,000 on groceries in one month
https://www.sfgate.com/food/article/bay-area-flashfood-app-grocery-deals-19419047.php
“A grocery deals app has helped Bay Area locals save thousands of dollars on groceries that otherwise would have ended up in landfills.“
“In mid-March, the Flashfood app partnered with the Save Mart Companies, parent company to Lucky supermarkets and FoodMaxx, to connect Bay Area shoppers to discounted items at 44 participating Lucky stores in the Bay Area. After a customer downloads the app, they can browse a selection of foods nearing their “best by” date for purchase and then pick them up at Flashfood refrigerators inside Lucky stores. The choice of deals changes daily depending on availability; on Tuesday, a Lucky store at 35820 Fremont Blvd. in Fremont had deals in the app on yogurt, deli meat and pet food.“
I put this on last year’s thread.
Hmm, a BART-convenient location now. And I’m just discovering the benefits of my senior Clipper Card–I paid just $3.60 round trip from North Berkeley to 24th Street a few days ago.
Great news, I love his brisket! I wasn’t so crazy about his fried chicken place.
Using the Matty’s Place space makes sense. It’s up and running but got mixed reviews, and his barbecue is his calling card. I wanted to check out Matty’s but read the reviews and saw the burger was $26. I wonder where they’ll smoke the meat. The 8th st location is nice but I don’t think there’s a space for smokers.
Re the Hyatt Regency Equinox being reopened:
Mediocre food, but good waitstaff and it was a fun place to relax after work. Unfortunately as more hi-rises went up, the scenic views went downhill.
I wish they’d reopen the Bankers Club bar at the top floor of the old BofA HQ on 555 California. Now THAT’S a view - and the chairs were comfortable. Open to the public after 3p, if I remember correctly. The restaurant wasn’t great, but the drinks were good and the bar area seating was on the North side - right across the Bay and Alcatraz/Angel Islands. Gorgeous, simply gorgeous…sigh!
