Lee’s Deli closing down. Anyone who worked in downtown SF must have run to this place. Inexpensive and always busy. I worked near like 3. It’s the only place I ever went to and there was too much bacon on the BLT. Went late-ish around 2 for lunch and the deli worker just grabbed a fist full of bacon and put it in the sandwich.

Launched in August 2023, Uptown Market is a retail hub at 1955 Broadway that features a rotating lineup of local entrepreneurs selling snacks, clothing, home goods, children’s books, and more in a space on the ground floor of tech company Block Inc.’s (formerly Square, Inc.) Oakland offices. It was created in partnership with Black Cultural Zone, a community development nonprofit, to give small business owners a chance to sell in a brick-and-mortar space without the often-prohibitive overhead cost of rent.

The mass deaths really suck.

On a different note, I really appreciate you and the others who contribute to this thread: I am happy to keep tabs on my old stomping grounds!

When the Chron did away with the pink entertainment section years ago I was able to pick up one of the t-shirts they were selling of ‘Little Man’. Black tee with the pink seated man. I need to go find that shirt.

“Nepalese food becomes Pakistani and Indian food, and that breaks my heart,” said Binita Pradhan, the owner of Bini’s Kitchen, a fast-casual Nepalese restaurant in SoMa famous for its lamb momos and for kwati, a kind of nine-bean Nepalese chili. She recognizes that tactical misrepresentation is done out of economic necessity, adding, “It’s survival for everybody right now. People are doing fusion cuisine, and it’s working.”

Persian New Year is in two weeks -

from SF Standard:

*The menu is filled with mazzes—the word, which gives the restaurant part of its name, means small dish and also “flavor” in Iranian. There’s the cucumber salad, where the pedestrian salad ingredient is elevated to new heights with the addition of barberries, fava beans and a fermented herb paste dressing. Another mazze, the eggplant and walnut dip, is swirled with pomegranate paste and served with crunchy sangak bread. The marinated olives, typically an afterthought snack on menus, arrive as a hearty portion swimming in tangy pomegranate molasses and sprinkled with Persian hogweed. *

I stopped buying almonds a few years ago given water use. To grow one (1) almond takes 3.2 gallons or 12 liters of water. That’s unsustainable in drought prone California. The crazier part is making almond milk…uses even more water.

IKEA in Downtown SF, 945 Market. will open an 11-stall food court in mid-April. There will also be an event space for live music and talks.

This sounds like a very clever idea.

From SF Standard -

The two-story complex will feature multiple bars and local food purveyors, including Curry Up Now, Kayma Algerian Eatery, Casa Borinqueña, Momo Noodle and Taqueria La Venganza, as well as Smörgåsland, an all-day artisanal bakery and eatery, and a cooking school: Cooking Skola. These entries will join in-house—and appropriately Scandinavian-sounding—concepts like a soft-serve outlet (Snöberg), a beer bar (the Lagom Bar), a cocktail bar (Punsch Bar) and a burger bar (Burgare Bar).

The IKEA-anchored mall in downtown SF, Saluhall, will arrive at 945 Market St. in mid-April 2024, with a variety of offerings that include baked goods, cocktails, tacos and noodles. The two-story, 23,000-square-foot space can accommodate 450 seated customers and will anchor the mixed-use development. Emphasis is on vegetarian and vegan dishes from five local restaurants and six in-house vendors. Those local operators are Puerto Rican restaurant Casa Borinqueña; Indian fusion chain Curry Up Now; popular Algerian spot and La Cocina incubator alum Kayma; top food truck Momo Noodle; and vegan taco shop Taqueria la Venganza.

Speaking of IKEA, their cafeteria is running some specials until the end of August. Entrees are. $3.99 on Tuesdays, and half price on Friday. Info inside the link. Entrees run about $12 regularly.

Since I live an easy distance to the Emeryville store, went today and had lunch with some friends. Europeans portion sizes, but it was wholesome and $3.99. Since I was there bought some stuff, silicon storage bags that can be used for sous vide.
