I slid on into the Kon Tiki earlier this year, the burger was legit. The bartenders weren’t very nice or attentive, but the one younger one on my end was hanging with her friend (on my side of the bar) who obviously was “in the industry” and ignoring the rest of us. She said she had invented a shot she called “f* the industry” which was mescal and cynar, and poured for the other bartenders, I got in on it (paid, of course). It’s pretty tasty, and I ordered it at another bar, and the bartender said “oh, that’s called something”, but couldn’t remember what, and I didn’t find it listed anywhere normative on the entire interwebs… so maybe she did invent it?.. Anyway, the Kon Tiki was nice enough but if I really want Tiki it’s all about forbidden island (but no food)… and Bar Shiro is still more my current style - or Mua I’ve still got a soft spot for. I was hoping to like Low Bar after the first visit, but the second visit, they closed about 2 hours early and shut me out. In some sense, fine, it’s slow, I get it, on the other hand, I was really liking the food and vibe.

Me too - I only made it to Kon Tiki once. The atmosphere and cocktails were good, and it’s a nice space. I didn’t try the food because there are so many places to eat that I want to try when I head over the bridge.

The eatery at the Seal Rock Inn on 545 Point Lobos Ave. is reopening on Jan. 2, the hotel announced on its website, after what was thought to be a permanent closure in 2020. “As an independently owned business, they can’t wait to welcome you back with a delicious variety of breakfast and lunch dishes,” the statement read. “They’re looking forward to seeing you again soon!”

How Henry Hsu Learned to Make Dumplings

Like many living in the vast Chinese diaspora, Hsu understood that his Taiwanese heritage was also shaped by his upbringing. He grew up on the Gulf Coast and went to the Midwest for his education. It was during his time living in Ecuador, where he found Asian pantry items hard to come by, that he taught himself how to make dumplings from scratch. Hsu now teaches others how to make his cold-water dumpling dough and stuff it with various fillings like a classic pork and cabbage filling made with a sweet Taiwanese flat cabbage, and a roasted veggie filling at workshops like this one coming up on Tuesday, January 14 at Preserved in Oakland. i just noticed that Korean restaurant a week ago, by my sister’s. in the same mini-mall as Banh Mi Ba Le, our go-to for banh mi. also really like Larb Thai Food & Tapas in the same mall. Will have to try Mugunghwa soon.
