I love SF Neon. I participated in their conference a few months ago and got to tour a neon workshop in Oakland.
As for stops on the I-5 between LA and SF, the last remaining Woolworth’s lunch counter in Bakersfield is worth a visit.

Homemade Cafe closing. These are the folks who did the everyone eats plate.
I kept meaning and forgetting to drop by there to donate to the everyone eats fund, and now it’s too late.
Just FYI, Wells’ reaction to the NM popovers is universal. NOBODY else that I know of is making these available on a restaurant menu. They are exquisite, and as unforgettable as the biscuits made by Banks White/The Rambler or the beignets made by Michael Warring.
Well worth ordering several more extra!
Cliff House used to make wonderful popovers.
Wayfare Tavern also makes them. They didn’t taste as good as I remembered the Cliff House ones, but that could also be nostalgia.
