Edalatpur in the East Bay Express -

TThere was something unexpected about the flavors in every one of Salguero’s dishes. None was more surprising than the tamal pisques. Steamed on the hearth inside several layers of plantain leaves, a deep red sauce tasted like the Salvadoran equivalent of a meatless Bolognese ragù. The fine layer of white queso duro dust, like the addition of parmesan to plates of pasta, confirmed an adjacent, and not entirely dissimilar, flavor profile. Filled with corn and black beans, this tender tamal was also vegan and gluten-free.

Add a Pinch of Alguashte to Brothy Clams

“Squash and pumpkins are huge crops in El Salvador, and the seeds never go to waste—they get toasted and ground to create alguashte. At the restaurant I stir it into a seafood stew that’s typically made with baby crabs, though here I’ve done it with clams. The alguashte adds a deep nuttiness and crunchy texture.”

More closures in Oakland.

I was driving through the Posey Tube, from Alameda to Oakland and noticed Tin’s Market (corner of 7th and Harrison) was closed. The normally jammed parking lot was empty and with a bunch of recycling left there. Saw it again the next day empty…so looks closed for good.

Luke Tsai visits new Haitian restaurant T’chaka in Old Oakland -

" I wouldn’t even consider wading into the dangerous waters of adjudicating whether Haitian jerk chicken is better than the Jamaican version, or measuring how Haitian curry goat stacks up to its Bajan or Trinidadian counterparts. Suffice it to say that even though the griot ranks up there with the best things I’ve eaten this year, it might not have even been my favorite dish at T’chaka. That honor goes to the braised oxtails, a dish I’ll order anytime I see it on a menu, and this was as good as it gets — meaty beyond expectation, with all of the soft, gelatinous bits cooked to such a state of jiggly lusciousness that sucking on the bones was pure pleasure.

T’chaka’s take on Caribbean braised oxtails is as good as it gets. (Luke Tsai/KQED)"

T’chaka is open Wed. through Sat. for lunch and dinner (11 a.m.–3 p.m. and 5–9 p.m.) and Sun. for all-day brunch (11 a.m.–6 p.m.). It’s located at Swan’s Market, 901 Washington St. in Oakland.

I saw T’Chaka when I was at the market a couple of weeks ago. I haven’t had Haitian food since I left NYC, so this is a “must” on my list.

Not sure if this is the right thread - obviously restaurants are opening and closing on a regular basis but breweries tend to be a bit more stable and so I don’t think it is a good sign that three Bay area breweries announced closing down in the last three weeks - Pedro Point, Das Brew and today Ale Industry

And the next local brewery announced closure today with Pacifica Brewery

I can attest that you can’t go wrong with the City College trained staff. My spouse graduated from their Hotel & Restaurant Mgmt training and it’s top-notch. I know CCSF is in danger of closing and I sincerely hope they can remain open with enough residents’ support.
