2022 Veggie gardens!

Ontario zone 5b. Those corms are buried deep. About 40 cm (16 inches).

Congratulations!

Rabbits love saffron crocus, especially the foliage.

I found “culinary solutions” to this dilemma, LOL! :yum:

What grows together, goes together. It’s only fair, especially considering the rabbit is already pre-seasoned.

Today we came to the last page of our annual gardening master chore list (currently a 6-page document). Aside from on-going clean up, the next jobs are not until January, when it will be time to prune the blueberries, start the spring lettuces in the green house, and plan the garden arrangement and seed order for 2023. Always a feeling of satisfaction on this day.

Photo is of the shelling peas and spinach – both under cover – which we’re wintering over.

Probably my last harvest of greens before a harder frost

Here’s the final fall potato harvest from yesterday. Not much yield, but the size is satisfying.

Also, a photo of the storage bin DH built this year. It’s located in an open shed and itself is insulated, so there is some small protection from both heat and cold. Unsure as to how it will hold up to a big freeze, should we get one, but in any case it’s a step up from what we used prior (including such choices as a damp and cold green house or overheated garage). So far, so good - I checked all the squashes yesterday and they look great.

Interesting and beautiful! I want to consider some space beneath our house of 25 years for storage but am afraid to even think about why I afraid to think about it.

you give me hope that our saffron crocus will pop up soon.

Article submitted! Next article is more in depth, and about rain water harvesting. Not sure its on topic in food gardening.

I say it’s on topic.

In our case, our rain barrels are an integral part of our garden. I realize rain water harvesting goes far beyond rain barrels - we have several rain gardens in town - but why not also discuss here?

What kind of foundation do you have? Most midcentury and newer houses here are built upon a concrete slab slapped on top of the ground, no crawl space. Very very few basements (which I would just about kill to have) here. Do you have a basement or cellar of some kind? Or could you add one?

What I understand is we are on a slope, not on a slab, and there is a steep rise between one end of the property and the others. There is access under the house from the garage and from the floor of the bedroom closet.

Here’s a few pictures.

Oh my- you nearly have a basement! I’m really entranced by them. If I win the Powerball I’m getting a basement put under this house. A friend of my son’s parents that live about a half mile away had a basement installed after they bought the house. Anyway, you could at least have a root cellar or some kind of basement put in down there if you wanted to. If you do, keep me posted- I’ll be drooling with envy.

I just don’t understand why I wouldn’t be competing with varmints for what is stored! I am stressed out enough by what hangs out “outside” my on so called property. The racoons and I aren’t sure about who is underwriting this endeavor.

I grew up with a basement but it it had rooms, and plumbing.

LOL- they probably think of you as a generous benefactress.
That’s a cute little raccoon but I know what vicious greedy demons they are. Do they hang around in your crawlspace?

I don’t have any reason to believe they are in my crawlspace, but several smaller racoons always seem to be triggering the motion detecting lighting on our deck. Maybethey live under the deck.
They have trained me to look away when the lights come on!

Husband says they would already be down there if they could.

You’re lucky s/he doesn’t wear the same size shoes as you, or those clogs would be gone.
