Funny, I almost included in my post that I prefer Goldilox over Bagelsaurus.
But I still like you.
Funny, I almost included in my post that I prefer Goldilox over Bagelsaurus.
But I still like you.
What about Goldilox do you like better than Bagelsaurus? This is purely for vicarious pleasure as there is nothing remotely comparable in Tucson. Although before this cr@p started I sure was making up for it by eating my weight in tacos!
haha, back atcha. what fun would it be if we always agreed? (even if you are objectively wrong in this instance!)
But Goldilox does have a good product and I like the people who run it, they’re super nice. I also always used to wonder about that space where they are too–before they moved in there I’d sometimes go to the late lamented Moulton’s and you could tell someone used that spot for baking but there was no retail component. I think someone used it for some sort of commercial supply operation or something, it always was curious to me.
How do either of them compare with the long-gone Eagerman’s?
I know that there used to be an Eagerman’s on Rt. 9 in Natick, which is the next town over from where I grew up in the 60’s/70’s. But I don’t remember us ever going there at all, my parents were English/Irish Catholic stock and bagels were not something that we did at all.
We went to the Eagerman’s in Natick and sometimes to the Eagerman’s in Chestnut Hill. Those were real bagels. Recently I went to a place here in Zurich called “Bagel Boys”. On their website they claim to have gone to New York to learn how to make bagels. Well, they do produce round bread. And when you look at their website and see that they offer pulled pork sandwiches on a bagel, that, I suppose, should arouse suspicion.
Got some great stuff from Clear Flour Bakery today. At 9 am they open their ordering web site for pick up the following day. You pick what you want and pay, and they call you with a one hour pick up window. I had a 1-2 pm window. When I showed up, I called the bakery and gave them my name. They asked me to either open my trunk, or a passenger window. I opened the trunk, they put my bag in and off I went. Less than 3 minutes total. I’m so looking forward to eggs and pain de mie toast tomorrow morning. Also the scrumptious blackberry tart for tomorrow’s dessert. As a side note, they also had toilet paper on their site for $1 a roll!
Good to know. I need some of their pizza dough soon.
We all really liked the Goldilox bagels, although my husband and son thought they lacked a bit of salt. I’d be equally happy with either Goldilox or Bagelsaurus, but they were more in the Bagelsaurus camp.
The Abbey in both Brookline and Cambridge is doing pick up twice a week, with growlers and wines for $20. They’re adding new items weekly. I’m making it my Friday night treat.
Oh, you’re still in Tucson! (Which reminds me, I never got around to posting about our AZ/southern Utah trip.) Did you get “stuck” out there? We flew back home about a week before the quarantine began in earnest. At least you get to hang out with your sis in a cool town!
Honestly, I don’t know why I said I preferred Goldilox over Bagelsaurus. Maybe it’s due to fading food memory? (I haven’t had Bagelsaurus in a long time.) I also didn’t love standing in line for sooo long at Bagelsaurus right next to some annoying folks, but maybe Goldilox is normally like that, too? (Man, I sound like such an old curmudgeon.) I thought the bagels were ever so slightly sweet - not Montreal sweet, but a tad too sweet - but I looked back at my raving reviews of Bagelsaurus, so maybe I’m just not remembering correctly? @bear B is a salt fiend and he found the salt level of Goldilox to be fine for him.
Who knows? The important thing is, they made a damned fine sandwich last night with roasted salmon, veggie cream cheese and thinly sliced cukes. And pulled out of the freezer this morning and slightly reheated, they were still very very good. They have just the right balance of crispy crust and tooth resistance and a liberal coating of seeds on the everything bagel that miraculously stays put for the most part. And not gargantuan in size (although B and I ate one half each this morning, both of us thinking, this is gonna go down way too easily, much like your favorite cocktail).
Thanks for that. I’m also a salt freak, and was surprised that they both felt that the salt level was too low, since they think I have a heavy hand with the salt. I thought they had good fermentation and were appropriately seasoned. Maybe I’ll try them again when things calm down and not tell them where they’re from!
We had a delicious Spring (Easter) dinner today thanks to Sarma. Picked up our order Saturday around 1:30 as arranged. In the front door, the floor had appropriate spacing taped out, picked out the appropriate bags by the hostess station and then exited out through the dining room. The kitchen had expanded out into the dining room by the bar.
We ordered Options 2 (ham ) and 3 (vegatables) dinners. Reheating instructions were included.
We ate the Mushroom Moussaka, one of 2 asparagus salads and the z’atar bread Saturday evening.
The moussaka was very good, eggplant, tomato-y sauce, cheesey well spiced sauce and mushrooms. Asparagus with mustard vinaigrette and I think walnuts but we did not receive those for either order.
The z’atar bread similar to what you are served at the restaurant. Even better heated up. No pictures. We ate too fast.
Sunday dinner was Aleppo ham with pineapple, Asparagus salad, green garlic stuffing, parsnip puree and a sweet potato challah bread. Along with Greek style green beans and lemon confit potatoes from option 3 dinner order.
It was all good, plenty for 3 of us with leftovers. The stuffing was my favorite and then the challah. The Parsnip puree was very rich, I ate it with the potatoes. My DH suggested a smear on a plate topped with seared scallops. That would be an excellent combination.
Happy Spring everyone, I hope everyone is well and coping.
Looks delicious!!
That Sarma meal looks fantastic! We had a great Easter dinner from Mamma Maria.
They have added a couple Easter Specials to their menu: Lamb Shank and Lamb Three Ways.
We got the Lamb Shank, Ragu, and Lobster Agnolotti. All three were delicious–our favorite was the Ragu! Both times we have ordered delivery from them, they have thrown in free delicious desserts (tiramisu and panna cotta)!
You can order takeout on their website. We ordered delivery on Grubhub!
that Mamma Maria meal looks great and reminds me that although I forgot to take pictures, we got some takeout from the extensive specials that were listed on Semolina’s Instagram page on Friday. Ordered some stuffed clams as an app and a artichoke/broccoli rabe pizza. Called in the order around 5:15, and they said it’d be 45 minutes. At 6:30 I was wondering a bit about the delivery, so I called again to check on it. When the person who answered the phone said “the person who is delivering your food is our owner, and we think she’s on the way” I decided to just wait as long as it took!
The food came shortly after, and y’know it was sort of lukewarm. But a little reheating was easily done and it tasted great (if a bit salty) and I have to say while I have always liked the vibe of this place in general, knowing that the owner was pitching in and doing the driving for orders at this time when that is a real commitment makes me feel even more positive about the place. Will probably check to see what they have for specials next weekend, when my homemade box curry rice runs out!
Wow, Semolina’s instagram looks great!
